Message: That's a tough question to answer with such limited information. It's like asking, "I have a repair to make on my truck, what tool should I use?"
Empty vs. heavily loaded. High speed vs. city streets. Boston vs. Phoenix. Rubicon vs. Montana highway.
I use my truck mostly for street driving. Some towing and hauling. About 25-30% high speed interstate. Occasional dirt roads and fire roads. No extreme off roading or mudding.
I have a set of Rancho RS5000's that I put on after only 10,000 miles. Vast improvement in ride and handeling. Inexpensive price, easy to install. All around a great shock for the money. I've also heard the Edelbrock IAS is pretty good for this kind of use, too.

Message: I mainly use it for a daily driver but I am often up at Silver Lake. I'm in michigan one of the worst states for roads. I would have to say 75% on road and 25% off road. A little bit of towing here and there and hauling of my quad. I hope that will help you out.. Thank you for your time. Dale

Message: I would use the RS5000's. There are probably better shocks out there, but the cost (IMO) becomes prohibative.

Message: I bought the Edelbrock IAS monotube and they are not cheap! The general OEM ride is maintained, with subtle improvements in braking and body roll, don't expect a big change with these shocks. If your truck doesn't have the sport handling pkg I think the improvements would be greater. A big difference I noticed when driving over washboard, the tail does not get nearly as squirrely like before.
I would buy them again.
p.s. these shocks install 'upside down' with the piston tube at the top.

Message: I replaced the OEM shocks on my '01 QuadCab with Rancho RS5000, They where shot in less then 3 months (guess I got a band lot).
I then replaced them with Monroe Reflex, two years later I still have a great ride on and off road. It has also helped eliminate the dreded rear end bonce that used to get me half sideways on corrigated (grooved cuts)cement on the freeways.

Message: Once I go through mine, which I have no clue what they are, I'm buying superlifts. They even offer them for dakotas with 1-2" of suspension lift, perfect for when I crank my t-bars!
How deep can that pond possibly be?

Message: Hey Purplemonster.
Something to consider:
Just crankin' the t-bars doesn't require different length shocks. The total amount of movement the front end suspension can make has not changed.
If you install longer shocks, and don't make sure the compressed length is the same as the original ones, the shock may bottom out way before you hit the bump stops, which could damage the shock mounts and/or lower control arms (A-arms). Not a cheap fix.

Message: Then why would they sell shocks with a 1-2" lift? No one makes a 1-2 inch lift for the dakotas, and rancho makes the 3" lift shocks. I figured the 1-2 inch lift shocks were for cranked t-bars and blocks. When that is done, it is actually a 1.5-2" suspension lift, which in my head leads me to believe these shocks would be perfect. Don't mean to be a smartass, just telling ya what I think. But no with cranked t-bars and blocks running stock length shocks would be perfectly fine, youre right.

Message: My previous comment was intended to be merely informational.
By "lifting" the front using only torsion bar settings, effectively nothing has been done to change the total lenght of travel of the front suspension, and you can save yourself some bucks by not having to buy new front shocks.
If a "lift kit" changes the front geometry with new A-arms or extension brackets, etc. to achieve the lift, then of course longer front shocks are needed and should be included in the kit.
If you block the rear to lift it, longer shocks are in order there as well, because the overall travel of the rear suspension is increased.

Message: Rancho 5000's or Rancho RS99136 front and RS99010 for rear if you want a little something extra. both are great shocks.
