Subject: I got a 93 Dakota!!!! WHAT NEXT?
IP: Logged

Message:
I recently just bought a 93 Dodge Dakota Extended Cab with the 5.2 and 4wd YEA... I've got 31's which rub abit but look great. It will be my daily driver i'm just wondering what should i do next to it, I have a Cat-back on it and don't want anymore performance... I can roast those 31 like nothing. I'm thinking a locker that i could maybe turn on or off... My trucks only got 134,000 miles on it which used to be only highway miles. So what now. By the way this forum RULES!!! I've learned alot about these trucks.

Easy Paul. Slowww down. You're gonna hyperventilate online. HA

Yes, you can install a body lift, 2” or 3” as a matter of fact. Performance Accessories makes them as does Trailmaster. They can be purchased at most any of the online stores as well as parts stores in your area. I suggest the 2” lift and that is only because it requires less modification to your rig. It can be done in a driveway or garage in about 4 hrs, not including relocating the bumpers. I would allow 4 hrs for each bumper, depending on your technical skills and assortment of tools. They don’t have to be done to drive it, but look much nicer when relocated.

The body lift “should” come with an extension for your Transfer case shifter. With that, everything should work.

A rear locker is nice. Do you currently have a limited (Chrysler referred to it as “anti”) slip differential in the rear? If so, you may wish to post pone a rear locker a while (unless you have already been stuck due to the wrong tire wanting to turn).

With 134k on the ol’ clicker I would consider checking “wear parts” for the amount of life left in them before I would blow my lunch money on aftermarket goodies. Don’t get too daring off pavement without doing this 1st. Universal joints, ball joints, tie-rod ends, brakes, cooling system (I’m talkin’ engine, not a/c), age of the battery to name a few. These may all be fine for around town, but get it off road with some torque applied and you will quickly start finding the weakest links. Believe me, 10 miles (or more) from the pavement is not where you want to be replacing these aged items.

Sounds like you are a bit excited, and rightfully so. Enjoy….

Thanks other bill, i just purchased today some offroad lights and mounted them on my bumper. Looks like a factory install.
I do have the limited slip on it. Most of the parts are barely used or replaced. The guy i bought it from said he barely ever had it in 4wd but of course that is what he says. The truck mechanicaly is sound. Minus the battery... I need a new one of those. I'm not sure but i think it is the original battery, its Mopar brand and i don't think the guy i got it from put it in... what do you guys think.
Any of you people have any good advise about wheeling in sand (Michigan Silver Lake Dunes to be precise)... I'll be out their later this summer, CAN'T WAIT

if it's never been in 4wd, that can be a bigger problem than if it has. the 4wd needs to be used every now and then just to keep stuff from sticking and rusting. the np231 transfer case(which you should have in there if i recall correctly) is prone to that. what color is your truck? i may be out at silver lake later this summer, i drive a red jeep cherokee and have a dakota sitting in the driveway (needs trans work).

My 4wd has been used only in 4hi cause it was used mostly for highway use... I went wheeling the other day and the transfer case and everything worked flawlessly!!!!! YEA it was great fun, I think my next mod is a pre runner bar on the front. Bout' the the wheeling it was in sand and it went well my tires dug abit but thats cause i never lowered the air pressure. Anyways it worked and ran great. Anyways my trucks a blue and silver color (two tone) Its still glossy NO RUST!!!! YEA Anyways and more mods???? I need a link to a website for the bodylift, I have yet to see a specific body lift for the 5.2 with 4wd. All i see is a 3.9 4wd, Any help will be appreciated.

When I bodylifted my 98 I don't think there was a difference in engine size. I can't imagine a 93 would be much different. BTW I have the 3.9. Wish every day I had bought the 5.2........

How deep can that pond possibly be?

So you guys don't think it matters what size engine you have... In
my JC Whitney catologs it specifys that for my truck on a body lift i
can't get one with the 5.2...... Like i said before only the 3.9!!!!!
Anyways i would love to get one but i still need a link, (I have yet to
find a website that i could buy one from) Anyways like before any
ideas for me would be great to have. I'm thinking maybe the
prerunner bar or a light bar that mounts to the roof of the truck
near the rear.( I've got a topper so no rollbar) anyways anymore
ideas would be great.

This is what JCW specifys for the dodge dakotas body lift. Notice
their very specific on what model truck you have... I think this is
the performance accessory brand... Also notice my year (93) and
4wd V8 doesn't work here. Everything except the v8 Anyone that
knows otherwise would be a great help

It’s been discussed many times in these forums. The reason you wont find a body lift listed for a Gen II V8 truck is because of a clearance issue between the fan and the lower radiator hose. The fan is mounted to the front of the engine and stays at the same height. The radiator lifts with the body and the lower hose no longer clears the fan. Most people get around this by using a V6 body lift and replacing the stock cooling fan with an electric fan instead.

Hey walter is it possible to lift it with the v6 body lift and mod the fan or hose so it will clear. Maybe mok some brackets up to lower the rad hose to stock height and make a small plate to protect the bottom 3 inches of the rad. Electric fan wise, how much would it cost to get one? I really need some lift 31's aren't big enough, The trailmasteris out of my budget right now and fender trimming is out of the questions.

I wouldn't bother trying to mock brackets to lower the radiator & hoses
back down. For the amount of effort expended, it's easier to just use and
electric fan.  In addition to that, by moving it down, it'll no longer be
centered in the opening in the radiator support and may even possibly disrupt
airflow a little through the radiator itself.  Buy a body lift for a V6,
put it on your truck and replace the stock cooling fan with an electric
unit.  It's been successfully done multiple times if you search this site.

The difference isn't the body, it's the same body  whether it's a 2wd or
4x4 with a V6 or V8. The difference is the drive train and some minor
differences in the frame (2wd vs. 4x4).  Same bumpers with the same
brackets.
