Message: Ive got a 99' Dakota extended cab with a 5.2 engine in it and ive got a problem when I mudd it. I don't have any engine mods on it. Ive got this problem though whenever I mudd I hit some big water holes and my tuck runs good for about 20 feet after it and then it stalls. The lights and everthing stay on but just the engine dies. It usually takes a couple of min before it starts again and then it runs rough enough for the check engine light to come on and that usually lasts for about 5 min after it starts again. What is my problem?

Message: Duh maybe water in da air box. If it keeps happening then why do you keep doing it? If you put your hand on the stove burner and the burner is on and you burn yourself, are you going to keep putting your hand on the hot burner...I hope not.

Message: I am dumb enough to do it. But still it wasn't that much water to get to the air box it had to have come from the top of the vehicle and besides ive checked the air filter and its never wet.

Message: Yeah its getting in the air box. i have the same truck as you and its happened to me before. i extended the fender wells and i cover the hole in the grill where the air comes in just for mudding it seems to work well. i've been looking for a snorkel application but can't find one so i'm going to have to go to home depot and make one.

Message: I second the distributor > I have never looked but locate the breather hole in your distributor > But a piece of light foam rubber in it but not tight > Remove cap and silacon the cap to distributor mating serface lightly > Let it sit till it starts to dry >> Not sticky > Reinstall > Then spray down your cap and plug wires end to end with silicon spray > This will work wonders for you > Also remove the tube going from your filter box to the iner fender > Not totally proper but good for the day > Install again when done playing

Message: I have had a similar problem with my dak also. I have the 3.9L in my truck not the 5.2L, but still when I go through mud holes the truck dies.
BCdakota
You are wrong! The first thing I checked was my air filter and the air box and they were bone dry.
Lance
I have never had the check engine light come on but when I finally get the truck started again it runs very rough for about 10 mins and then runs fine. This problem stumped me for the first few times, but I think it has to do with the distributor cap like mitch said above.
Also, sometimes when I spray the engine off the truck will act like it is going to stall but never becomes as severe as when I go mudding.

Message: I agree with the distributor theory. I have had the same thing happen with my 3.9, right in the middle of a puddle.

Message: I have a 97, 3.9 and i've had the same problem with the Distributor. Never when I was mudding. This is going to sound kinda weird but it was really humid and was after it rained. It ran ok in the rain storm but when i arked the truck and an hour later it wouldnt start. Popped the hood and checked it all out and the distributor had a ton of condensation on it. Not sure if it was from the storm or the humidity but i took off the wires, dried out the insides (and the cap itself) and it started right up.
Not sure if this helps at all..just wanted to put in my 2 cents.
