2WD Dakotas don't have front axleshaft in the way, so they're coil sprung.
Axleshaft in the way leaves no real room for coil springs, except the '05s are 100% coil-over shock design. Coil-overs tend to be longer, but a bit more compact, and with the spring on the upper half of the shock, there's room for them to connect to the lower control arm (A-arm).
