Message: I called the local exhaust place and asked them about getting dual exhaust for my 4.7L v8 4x4 quadcab.. They said they can’t do true dual exhaust because of *something er other*. I was wondering if there is anyway to get true dual exhaust for the 4.7 L v8 .. Can any of you think of anything? Or if there isn’t what would u recommend for a exhaust system for off-road performance?

Message: The 4.7 has 3 cats so you cant do true duals without tinkering with them. You can do a single in dual out muffler. I went with a Flowmaster but they are all pretty much the same performance wise. Biggest difference between the brands is just how loud it is and the tone.

Message: Hey Hawk,
Since were on the subject of exhaust, can you tell me how good the stock exhaust on a 4.7 is? I want to put on a set of headers (along with other mods from speedtweaks), but wondered what else should be done to the rest of the exhaust system. I don't want to mess with the basic configuration (i.e. removing cats). I haven't poked my head underneath to see what size tubing is used and/or what the muffler(s) looked like. Any recommendations for a bolt-on solution? I plan on going with the larger throttle body and z-tube at the same time.

Message: The best power gains seem to be from the Single 3" catbacks. For offroading, a side exit is better. Less likely to crunch it when its behind the wheel instead of under the back bumper. I have the Flowmaster Force II and am very happy with it.

Message: I have the Gibson, single 3 1/2 Cat-back exhaust on my 2000 CC, 4x4, 4.7....It rocks, it sounds awesome when you get on the gas. My friend has had a Gibson exhaust since 98 on his 1998, CC, 4x4, 5.2, his truck also sounds great! I am very happy with the exhaust, I also have the K&N air filter which is something you should also look into.

Message: I have really looked into the performance side and a 3 inch single and 2.5 duals actually equal out to be pretty much the same in gains. Os for off road, the problem I have seen with single exits is if you happen to drop the right rear tire into a hole, I have seen this happen and the tail pipe gets pushed up by the ground. Sometimes if there is enough room its puts a lot of leverage on the pipes and I have seen and heard of it cracking or bending things anywhere from the muffler all the way to the manifold/headers. Not saying its a bad way to go, just the one downside to it. With duals out the back like mine, I can put the back end on the ground and there is not but about an inch that the pipes can move before hitting the bumper, by that time the rear and would be resting on the receiver hitch, not allowing the pipes to be damaged. Take note that this is only if you have a receiver hitch. I actually did this just yesterday going through a ditch. Back end hit and rested on the receiver hitch and the pipes just kinda slid off nice and smooth. Just food for thought. Either one is ok, and either can be damaged, you just have to be conscious of what you have when off roading, which you should be regardless.
Robert, I am planning on a set of ceramic JBA headers as soon as money allows and maybe a new TB down the road. Have to see how things go. From what Bernd and a few others have said, the new TB and z-tube works really well together. Ditch the stock muffler as soon as possible. I dont see how air even moves through the stock mufflers.

Message: I had dual exhaust put on my old Ranger by MIDAS. First, it looked like a couple of twisted, bent-up, mangled pipes with 3" chrome tips on the end. Secondly, every time I went over the littlest bump, the pipes banged off the rear sway bar. Lastly, I brought it back 3 times to get stuff fixed on it that broke in about two weeks (sure I could fix it myself, but I paid $300 so I figured they should fix it).
So, if you can avoid going to MIDAS, avoid it at all costs.

Message: I had my truck routed out the sides. I like the look much better. It gives the I'm not like everyone else look and we have seen the out the back pipes get clogged up before a few times. My local muffler guy did an excellent job and tucked it up as high as possible. Your tail pipes will get more road spray and tar on them. I went with Stainless steel tail pipes so they would take a bit more abuse.
I do see Hawk's point on the out the side vs. out the back. I would go with what you think looks the best for your trucks rear via if you do not have a problem with either points mentioned from Hawkeye.
My wheelin buddy just got a '02 quad 4x4 and he like the out the side look better as well and is going to do his that way as well.

which one sounds deeper or better??
i'm just trying to find an exaust that sounds deep and clean, what would you all recommend??

Message: Joey,
Do you have a V6 or v8?
I put a 2 chamber Flowmaster on a V6 and it is louder and throatier than the recommended 3 chamber.
If you have a V8 then I do not know.
I do not know about a single out for Flowmasters.
Definate difference once I added the Flowmasters in performance.

Message: I'd be hesitant to run true duals on the 4.7. From what I've heard, the 4.7 is more sensitive to backpressure than the 318/360. True duals or even a single in/dual out muffler might flow too much - and give up too much torque.

Message: You absolutely need no backpressure in any exhaust system, what you need is velocity. The more free the flow is, the better. The best way to go would be a true free flow exhaust with the correct size of pipe. The loss doesn't come from less backpressure, but because the gases slow down too much after the muffler with the dual 3" pipes everyone wants to put on. The perfect exhaust would be designed to get the gases out as soon as possible, yet keep the flow rate even. If you feel your exhaust gas and it is cold, then your pipes are too big, or you have it restricted upstream too much (read catalytic converter). If performance is what you are after, I would just replace your stock muffler and third cat with high flow units. Remember that the longer the exhaust is the more time it has to cool down in the pipe, thus disrupting flow.

Message: all right....my .02
i currently have my 3rd cat pulled going 3" back to a flowmaster delta 50. 3" in, dual 2.25 out. dual tips strait out the back. Problems i've run into:
-because if no contact to the frame, and the muffler being under the bed....with windows up, i don't hear very much sounds quiet. now, with the windows down....loud as a mother.... i even had a friend drive it around in front of me as i followed. thing is deafaning. and he said he never went above 4000rpm.
-offroading i have allready sandwitched a tip, but most of you don't offroad like i do, so you should be okay. also if you do dual out the back, make SURE you zip tie the wires for your plate light to the frame. i was doing a weekly inspection on it and found the wire slagged half way through cause it was resting on a tip.
as for going true duals...the o2 sensors for the 2001+ are right behind the precats...that said....
i'm going to do the jba's and true duals after i get my longtravel done. if you look on speedtweaks.net, they have o2 sensor "trickers" for our trucks goes for 95.00 (i think) making true duals possible. i'll be running this setup, but i have no idea where i'm gonna run my pipes, i was thinking of drilling 2 holes and running them through the top side of my bed, but i haven't decided yet, and that my be a little extreme.
thats all i have to say about that.

I have a single Flowmaster muffler w/ nothing done to the cats. My exhaust is not exiting either side or rear, I have a turndown. Mine dumps right before the rear axle. Now if your going for sound inside the cab, well, it's LOUD. Sounds great. If you want sound from outside, well, it's also LOUD. Sounds great (you know, car alarm style :) ). Mine also will not get damaged from off roading either, cause it's tucked up pretty good. Best part about it, it cost me $93 installed. Most bang for the buck so far w/ my truck. Single Flo w/ turndown.
