Message: I saved the cash. Instead, bring the tow strap to your rig, route it under the cross bar of the of the hitch. Bring it over the top of the cross bar and put the loop over the part of the hitch where you would have slid the insert into. Walah!! You are ready to pull....and you haven't reduced your departure angle in the process.

Message: Or of your strap fits into the receiver, then stick it in there and catch it with your normal insert pin, that should be plenty strong. This information was takedn from a reputable 4x4 shop.

Message: Pin method sounds good I'll have to check if my tow strap hook fits in there. Thanks for the tip.
I have a hidden hitch and if I'm stuck I doubt that I would be able to get to my hitch cross member.
Are there any inserts out there that just barely come out of the receiver so it wont affect my departure angle?
Thanks

Message: It is either go with the pin method or go buy a Warn type insert with a clevice but that is usually about $50. I think it would be cheaper to go buy a strap that will fit and the 2 inch strap should be plenty strong.

Message: A 2" strap is not strong enough! I snapped one pulling on a stump. I just took my old reciever and bought a big shackle and a grade 8 bolt the size of the hole and bolted it in. Works great and WILL NOT come loose.

Message: I just saw a 2" strap that is rated at 20,000 lbs. That is a lot more that your receiver is rates for. Gotta be careful, rather break a strap that your receiver or worse to bend your frame or such.

Message: the only way you broke that 2" strap is by snapping. i prefer not to snap, and only use it as a last resort. as others have stated i would much rather have a $20 strap as my weak link rather than bend a frame or rip a hitch off(i have seen it happen) if i can pull with just traction and power i link together another truck and we both pull always works

Message: OK to answer Calikota's question, I bought a d-ring receiver insert through 4 Wheel Parts http://www.4wheelparts.com. They were running a deal about 6 months ago where you would get the d-ring insert, a second d-ring, a receiver style tow hook, and a hitch pin for around $50 bucks. I can't find the exact kit that I bought on their website, but if you call them I'm sure they can set you up. If you need pics I can try to get some for ya. Let me know.
