Subject: Torsion Bar Removal IP: Logged
Message: I have a 95 v6 Dakota with two worn out torsion bars. How do i go about removing them to install new ones? If anyone could tell me makes the v8 torsion bars different from the v6 ones that would be great. Could i modify my v6 torsion bars to make my truck sit level again?

Message: How did you determine they are worn? They are nearly indestructable high quality springy steel. There are no replaceable wear parts, and I have never serviced mine (except for ride height djustment)other family members, customers or even heard of them needing work outside of really bad collisional damage.

Message: Did you buy this truck used ? Wondering if the last owner had them off and got them reverced > They are preloaded in one direction and although I've never had mine off my 99 DAK, I have had many off other autos and they was all marked L & R >> Left and right > If they act like they have no spring to them and or sag this could be a posibility

Message: CP, Torsion bars are not indestructible and will weaken causing the front to sag over time. Just driving down the road, there is a constant twisting and releasing action on the torsion bars. As with any spring, and yes, a torsion bar is a lateral spring, the more times you compress (or twist) and then release, the weaker it will become. Simply parking on an uneven surface for a long enough period can cause one side to sag more than the other. I can attest to this first hand having parked my truck with the passenger’s side wheel in a ditch one day at a party. After only a few hours, there was a noticeable difference in the front ride height of the driver’s side, which was compressed while parked in that spot. I’m not surprised to hear a 10 yr old truck has some front-end sag. The factory even plans for some when the build the truck. Typically, a new vehicle will settle some during the first 2000 miles of operation and to compensate for this the plant will set the front suspension slightly higher than the service specification. Rob, if you have any room for adjustment left, you can try to crank them higher. But if the adjusters are maxxed out, you’ll need to replace the bars to gain any height. The V6 and V8 bars are interchangeable; they just have different spring rates. I have a set of V8 bars on my ’88 Sport. If you need instructions on how to adjust the bars, I have them on my personal website in the section for my Red Dakota.

Message: They aren't indestructible but are awfully tough. The previous owner of my 'Cuda sandblasted the torsion bars to clean them. That killed them...
