Subject: 89 Dakota 4WD CAD problem IP: Logged
Message: I have 1989 Dak 4x4 where sometimes the 4wd light comes on where I shift into 4lo or 4hi but the front hub is not engaged. I have verified that the driveshaft from the t-case to front differential is turning.
So I think I have narrowed it down to one of the
following:
1) Marginal vacuum from tcase to CAD
2) CAD is working intermittently.
I always thought the 4WD light indicated that the front hubs were engaged but there seems to times
where the CAD malfunctions and turns on the 4wd lamp even though the front hubs are not in.
Does anyone know the amount of vacuum pressure that should exist at the CAD?
Walt's 4wd page has been very helpful.
http://www.walt-n-ingrid.com/modifications.html#4x4
Any other suggestions are welcome.
Thanks,
Glenn

Message: Also intermittently, when the 4WD shift lever is 2WD the truck stays in 4WD.
I am confused at this point.

Message: I forgot to add the truck really is in 4WD (which becomes a problem on dry pavement) when the lever is in 2WD.

Message: I was just about to make and add a couple of troubleshooting flowcharts to update that page with some additional info I have come up with. For now, if you have a vacuum gage, the amount of vacuum at the disconnect should be between 10-20 in. hg.

Note: I very frequently get email from people asking about the lift kit in my ’88. Typically, I will NOT respond to the emails (about 95%) that ask questions I’ve already covered on my web pages (ie. Where did you get the kit?, Who makes it?, How much did it cost?, What modifications did you have to make to get it to fit your truck?. How hard was it to install? What problems did you encounter? etc, etc...)

Message: Thanks for the information, Walt. I think
it will help in resolving the front hub problem.
I just had the t-case rebuilt ( chain broke ).
I thought I got a good deal on it for $400 but
perhaps I got what I paid for as intermittently
it stays in 4WD even when the lever is in the 2WD
postion ( I can tell by the road noise on turns and 4WD lamp ). I think this problem has to be
with the t-case itself.
Tommorow it goes back to the shop.

Message: my 95 does it sometimes too. when first going into 4hi, it doesnt want to stay in. once it stays in 4hi, it doesnt want to go back into 2hi. the solution i've found is to hold the lever in 2wd and spin the tires a bit on the grass, mud, etc...then she'll stay in 2hi.

Message: I didn't realize that was still listed on Posi-Lok's website but it's been there, listed as "in development", for a few years. They never came out with it and when I last inquired about the status, a couple of years ago, the person I spoke with said they were not going to pursue it. One thing was it was such a small market it didn't justify the R&D cost because only the 87-90 Dakota has a CAD, 91 and later doesn't. I was told by their guy, they didn't feel there would be enough demand for the application, so the project was dropped. As to why it's still listed on their site, I don't know but most manufactures will not put the effort into developing a product that will only sell a handful of units.

Message: DAMNIT
well, thanks for the info Walt, now i guess i will have to run some vacuum lines and find a switch for them, the new T-Case lacks the vacuum switch, and its a lame setup anyway
hhmmm, i might be able to custom fab one though
any ideas?

Message: Unscrew the old one and screw the new one in. It's a simple unit with a threaded end. Looks kind of like an oil pressure sending unit but has 4 vacuum hoses connected to it. The fitting with the hoses are keyed to only go on one way.
