I'm thinking a cheap route to having tow hooks on the front of my 1999 4x4 is to put a D-ring on the front bumper. I would remove the bumper and put it near or in front of one of the two bumper mounts and if possible, I'd put a heavy steel backing plate on the back side of the bumper to distribute the weight. I'd bolt it all together as I am lacking in the area of welding knowledge. lol
Anyone think a stock front bumper could handle this kind of weight, such as being towed out of mud uphill?
I haven't removed my front bumper to see just how strong it and the mounts are, but I'm guessing this is a possible solution.

i think it would be a great idea if the bumper was a lil stronger. personally i wouldnt trust anything but the frame or something attacted sirectly to the frame as a towing point. i have a feeling it would very quickly deform your bumper if you needed a med to hard pull

Thanks for the input. After getting a simillar response on another site. I decided to get a front mount receiver hitch. With that, I can get a tow hoook that plugs into it and later down the road a winch.

99 4x4 5.2, the bumper is pretty damn strong if you ask me, totaled a lexus with it didnt even budge

After taking it off and remounting it...it is MUCH stronger than the front bumper on my Pathfinder...but I dont think I would use it as a tow point. Good to hear that the mentioned accident didnt move it, but in a towing situation, all the weight of the truck (and force of the mud) would be on a single point, not distributed across both frame mounting points.

I took off my bumper on my 03 dake to replace it with a winch bumper. The bumper weighs about 30 lbs. I would not call it very strong at all and would never try pulling one.
