Subject: tuff country on v6? IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys,
I have a 98 dakota cc v6 with a 3" body lift. I was looking at the rancho lift to clear either oversized 33's or 35's, but I REALLY want the tuff country lift. I understand I would have to regear, upgrade my brakes, lengthen my driveshafts, and all that other fuss, but I want to know is could I use the stock rear end? Would I have to swap out a D60 or 9" out of an old Ford? Could I use the 9.25" rear end out of my 84 ramcharger? I have seen dakotas with the body lift and tuff country use the stock rear end, but they were all v8's with the 9.25" rear end (v6's come with the 8.25")

Message: I'm running a 5.5 tuff country, 3 inch body, and didnt have to swap out any of that. I have the 5.2 v8 with the stock 8.25" rear end with stock 3.55 gears.... if you want a lift, definitly go with this one...

either way, from the looks of your site, I believe you are running 33's? I want to run 35's or 36's (realistically 35's) and I just don't want to regear my rear end and slap on 35's to have it blow out on the trail. I have stock 3.92's right now, I want to upgrade to 4.10's or 4.56's. It is my belief that the 8.25" rear end is the same one they use on the jeep wranglers which are pretty durable. I also realize that while the truck may be 9" higher, it's really only 6" suspension height. I guess what scares me is big tires on a little rear end.

Message: Your rearend should hold up fine as long as you don't go any taller than 35s. A Tuff Country setup with a 2" body should set the perfect stance for 35s.

Message: Well according to the sticker in the glovebox my rear end is 8.25" and im currently running 33's on the stock 3.55 gear ratio. i too plan to regear sometime right after or before i put on a set of 35's. i'm not worried about blowing out the rear end but i am worried about the strain on the tranny and motor. so your best bet would be a set of 4.10's. Does anyone know who even sells a decent set of gears and for how much? and for a gear swap do i only need to buy the ring and pinion ?

Message: Randy's ring and pinion and reider racing seem to be the bigshots in the differential industry, but they don't even post prices on their sites. I went on to drivetrainsuperstores.com, and you can search for parts right by your axle. A set of front and rear precision gears (the best) will run about $500. You will need an install kit, but I don't know if its the minor or major install kit.
