Subject: 4.56 gears IP: Logged
Message: Has anyone here went with 4.56 gears with stock tires?
I had the 245-70 16's tires and now have 255-65 16's same height just wider.
I'm going to swap from 3.55's to what I was thinking of 4.10 gears but has anyone dared to run 4.56's with stock tires?
I'd like to rip through them 1st gears yet not scream to bad on the highway.
I've got the 4.7 and the 5-45RFE which has the .67 overdrive ratio.

Message: Do you have a manual tranny or auto?
My V8 with the 5 speed auto has the .67 overdrive ratio which would run mine lower RPM's on the highway than the older autos or the manuals will.
I know someone said they had 4.56's and loves them. But i want to hear form more people.
I'd hate to swap and not like them.
Does anyone with a similar truck to mine (4X4 v8) have 4.56's?

Message: I have 4.56's with 35" tires, and 1st gear pretty dam low. Since you say that you have stock size tires, I would not go with anything over 4.10's. I had 3.92's stock and I thought that they were perfect, plenty of power all around.

Message: Yeah. I think 4.10's are going to be best for my application. Just spent money on other mods, so got to wait for the gears now :-P

Message: I'd definitely advise against not going with the 4:56. I tried it but luckily the gear installer screwed things up which allowed me to go to 4:10s.
I ran the 4:56 with 32 procomps A/T for only a couple of days and man my RPM levels were through the roof. Bad bad bad. I think it was close to 2600 RPM at 55mph. I orginally had 3:55s on this set up and it bogged down pretty bad going up hills and so forth.
I'm running 4:10s now with 33 BFG A/T and even with those the RPMS are still at tad high but so way better than 3:55s or 4:56. At 70mph I'm close to 2200 rpm. I'm getting worse gas mileage now with the lower gears by about 30 miles per tank. My 33 BFG A/T are really closer too 32 than 33s so I think maybe that's part of my problem. But this is a close to perfect as I think you can get. My set up is great for towing and being in town. But when those wear out I"m going to switch to a true 33 and I think I'll be perfect.
I also installed an Auburn LSD which is much more aggressive than the stock LSD. Two thumbs up for sure on this swap. I can hear both tires spinning now when I take corners and the trucks slips also I've noticed that I get a lot better traction when towing so it was worth it for me since I drive mostly on the street. A locker would be too much I think since I drive 95% on street.
Hope all this helps

Message: I agree...4.56 gears would be WAY too tight for stock-sized tires.
My truck originally had the 3.55's with 31 inch tires from the factory, which was borderline for me...I wanted something a little lower but not much. When I put 32 inch tires on it, the gearing was definetly too high. I did my gear swap in spring 2002, and at the time there was nothing but factory 3.55's or 3.92's available for the front end, so I swapped to 3.92's. I'm really happy with it. 3.92's are 10% lower than the 3.55's, but the 32 inch tire is 5% larger than the 31, so it works out to 5% overall lower gearing...perfect for me.

Message: Yeah. I've only heard form one guy here with 4.56's who loved them. 4.10's will be what I'll go with.
I think with the 5-45RFE my high OD gear will still be fine. 2200 RPM's in OD is nothing. I think I'm at 1930 RPM's now to do 70 or so.
So with my 29.05" tall tires I'd be fine doing 2200 at 70 running the 4.10's.
