Subject: 3.92 gear swap advice??? IP: Logged
Message: My '97 currently has the 3.55 gears and I am looking seriously at getting the 3.92's for the rear, but have a few questions. First, does it matter if I don't do the gears in the front as well? I'm assuming they are 3.55 too, so if I'm in 4wd with different gear ratios in front and back will that mess things up? Also, I'm assuming plenty of you guys in this post have done the swap yourself, just wondering how difficult it was, any special tools needed, any specific advice would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance for the help!!!

Message: 2% or less difference is considered ok, with what you are talking about the difference is way too far off and would seriously screw things up. leave it be or change both, trust me

Message: That's kind of what I figured. The next question is, I found a set of 3.90 for the rear, so would 3.92 be alright for the front? That seems close enough, especially since 4wd is only used of loose surfaces anyway. What size is the front diff? It's on a '97 318, the back is 8.25. Where can I find a set of front gears for cheap? Lastly, I'm trying to figure out if this is something that can be done myself or if it needs to be professionally installed? Thanks.

Message: Still looking for someone who has done a gear swap themselves and has any advice on whether or not it should be done professionally or can be done yourself? Any suggestions either way would be great.

Message: Front is a Dana 35. I do all of my own gear swaps. If you've never done it, have it done professionally, or if you want to do it yourself, make sure you have the guidance of someone experienced. It's not as simple as just bolting stuff in, you can really screw things up and it can get expensive.

Message: I disagree with UWGriz on one point. I think the front axle in a 97 is still a 7.25". The Gen III trucks didn't switch to an IFS variation of a DANA 35 untill 1999, I believe.
But he is correct, if you've never done it before, hire a professional. If you don't have it shimed correctly, it'll make noise and tear itself apart in a short time.

Note: I very frequently get email from people asking about the lift kit in my
’88. Typically, I will NOT respond the emails (about 90%) that ask questions
I’ve already covered on my web pages (ie. Where did you get the kit?, Who
makes it?, How much did it cost?, What modifications did you have to make to get it to fit your truck?. How hard was it to install? What problems did you
encounter? etc, etc...)

Message: The front on my 97 is also a dana 35(definately) according to whats etched on the diff cover and whats written inside the glove box.I have debateing between 3.90's and 4.10's for awhile now and with my 33's i'm leaning toward's 4.10.Could use the extra grunt from the 4.10's in deep mud and hillclimb's.I would also recomend having a pro install them.Just the right tools to get the job done will cost a small fortune ontop of the gears it get's pretty pricy.

Message: Actually the 97-99s is a Dana M35. There is some differences between it and a Dana 35. Make sure you specify it to the vendor you buy your parts from

Message: Alright, here's what it comes down to. I have a chance to get 3.92's out of a '99 dak with the 8.25 rear diff, same as mine. Being a '99 though can I assume that the front diff is the same or is it probably different?

Message: I got the word that the front diff I want to buy out of a '99 is the dana35. Mine definitely is not. I am getting the entire from differential casing, R & P, etc. The whole thing. Will this be a direct, bolt on replacement for the front of my '97. That would be great if it was because I could just swap diffs and not have to worry about paying someone to install the gears. Let me know what you guys think, I'm not much of a drivetrain/suspension guy, more of engine buff. Thanks for all your help.

Message: I would assume that it would bolt in but could be wrong. I know that the lifts for 97-99 have all the same braketry so the diff's should have the same mounting. But if it doesn't work out for ya let me know cause my 97 has the dana35 in it and could use the gears if the price would be right.Let me know how it works out.

Message: I was under the impression that the 97-99 Dakotas all had the Dana 35 and that the change to the Coroporate 205mm diff happened for 2000. At least that's what I ran into when I did my swap from 3.55's to 3.92's. At the time that I did my swap (spring 2002) there was only the option of going to the 3.92's because nobody made any tighter gears for the front end. So due to parts availability I have 3.9 in the rear and 3.92 in the front. That's less than 1/2% difference...absolutely no problems at all doing that. The gear swap was a great mod, and I'm actually glad that there wasn't any tighter gearing available...the 3.9 gears work great for me.
Seems though that Dodge didn't have much rhyme or reason for different rear diffs being in similar trucks...My 00 has a 9.25 rear axle, lots of other 00's have the 8.25. I had thought the Dana 35 vs Corporate 205mm was strictly a model year difference, but I guess not.
