A friend of mine I haven't seen in a while, was telling me about an accident he saw a while back. Up on I-70 near Idahoe Springs, a man in a Jeep Charokee, with a body lift slammed on the breaks, and as he did this. The body lift broke sending the body off the suspension. Killing all onboard. Suspension lifts are much safer.

if the proper materials are used and the lift is installed by someone with a brain they are safe. if you use low grade bolts you are asking for trouble.

Actually, if you use high grade bolts such as grade 8 you have a greater risk of shearing the bolts. You should use grade 5 or lower because they will bend instead of breaking trust me 12 years as a machinest i know about steel, and yes unless you need room for a differnt motor stay away from body lifts. Eventualy they WILL help ruin your truck no matter what kind of materials thier made with.

If purchased as a kit and installed correctly, there is no issue with bodylifts. They actually raise the center of gravity less than a suspension lift and do not affect the ride and handling as significantly. Furthermore, unless this was a 1970's era Cherokee it could not have had a body lift. All '84 and newer Cherokees are unibody in design, eg. no separate body and frame.

Don't know what you're talking about. I've had the 2" Body Lift with 3" Suspension lift on my truck for over 2 years with several "emergency braking" manuevers. No breaking/slipping/whatever on my body lift.

Installation issue I guess.

You can't put a body lift on a Cherokee, it's a unibody, so your friend was handing you a line of sh*t

Take your own advice.

The Jeep Cherokee (XJ) was produced from 1984 until 2002.

The Jeep Cherokee (SJ) was produced from 1962 until 1983. It was a body on frame. Before anyone jumps in to correct me, the Grand Wagoneer (SJ) was produced from 1962 until 1991.

As for the original post, it's not uncommon for hillbilly lifts made using hockey pucks or square tubing cut into lengths and through bolted to collapse or even disengage the body from the frame in accidents, especially if common grade hardware was used. However, if done properly, body lifts are perfectly safe.

Check out Body Lift Instructions

I've been installing lift kits for about 13 years
and have seen everthing go wrong from stock front sping perches sheering off the frame in an accident to the new drop sub frame on 88+
chevy 4dw buckling in a relatively small hit in
the front. The logical conclusion is the quality
of the lift and instalation MUST be excellent and PROPPER care throughout the life of lift,
including bi-yearly tourquing and thourough yearly inspection. I personally have a ranger that has a 3" body lift and 10"s of suspension lift and have been in 2 accidents one head on when the other person crossed the line (approxamate combined speed 60 mph) guess what
body lift didn't move, frame bent though.
It's all about care and quality.
just tyin to make a point...

I have a 2002 dakota slt w/ a 4.7 an yes I found a suspension lift for it. Fab Tech makes a 3" suspension, and I had it installed by 4 wheel parts. My problem with it is that the rear sits a inch and a half too low in the rear. Does anyone know who makes a after market shackle to lift the rear? NO you can't use blocks, axle over spring would lower it. The lift is good rode is good just to low in the rear.

For matt jones:
It sounds like the dealer who installed your kit either put the wrong add-a-leaf in the rear or has the front torsion bars cranked up to high. Check with the dealer or local alignment shop for factory ride height of your vehicle. I know it's lifted but the measurements from factory suspension measuring points should stay the same even after the lift, usually from lower control arm to bumstop. I'll get back with you tomorrow night with additional rear lift. I need to know if the lift came with rear springs or add-a-leaf. Keep an eye on the ball joints dodge is working on a recall I think, they're wearing out in under 40k miles.
