Subject: Warranty denial - what are the laws? IP: Logged
Message: I thought I had read somewhere in the past that there are some laws regarding the denial of warranty service due to aftermarket modifications... Anyone know where I can find some info on this? (I'm located in BC, Canada).
Here's the deal. I installed a 3 inch body lift and 33 inch tires on my 2001 Dakota 4x4. This was about 2 months ago. The other day I got under the truck and noticed that my power steering box or rack is leaking fluid. I want to have the dealer look at it because the truck is under warranty. However, based on my past experiences with stealerships, I bet that they're going to tell me I'm SOL on the steering problem because my body lift and big tires caused it. (which of course is not the case - there are barely 3000 kms on the new tires and the fluid leak is already substantial).
So I want to be prepared with my counter-argument when they start feeding me the bullsh*t.
The law / act that I'm referring to was named after some guy's last name. Any ideas?

Message: Magnusen-Moss Warrenty Act. Does that apply in Canada? I wouldn't think so, since it's a US statute.

Message: Been there done that. I had the same leak with 31" tires and 3" susp lift (this was before the body lift). They refused to honor the warranty so i searched online junkyards for a new steering box. Ended up finding one off a 2001 dakota for $159 and it only had 6k miles on it. The steering rack is the only leak i had on my dakota in 4 years of abusive ownership :)

Message: The reality of the matter is that the larger tires do put more strain on the power steering and accelerates wear and tear. Would it have gone out with the stock tires? probably so. Does the dealership have a strong enough case to reject your claim? probable so.

Message: Why not just put your stock size tires back on? When they ask, tell them you noticed the leak when you were installing the body lift.

Message: That's what i do with my jeep. I have 31" superswamper LTB's. I also have a set of 30" mud terrains that i use to the dealership :) Kinda worth it to me cuz i've been there 13 times for warranty work :)
....i just find it very irritating to have to remove the lift, stick on stock tires, and then go to the dealer....sucks but saves $$.
