Subject: front hooks
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi - I bought two generic tow hooks to mount to the frame on the front of my GenIII. I took a fast peek under the truck and I didn't see an obvious spot to mount them. Help :-) Is it possible to mount them in a useful place that won't rip off my front bumper skirt???

TIA!
Wal

Wal,

If you have a body lift then mount the hooks directly on the frame. But if you are running stock height there really isn't a good place to mount front tow hooks.

you can install a front hitch on 4wd models for a hair over 100 bucks. this would be a better point to pull from then the hooks anyways. i can provide a link if you are interested. and also it bolts right in, no drilling. it is what i plan to do instead of messing with the whole hook nightmare.

it looks great, but I always thought you should never pull a truck out from the hitch because it can excert a force on the frame of the truck that twists it out of shape. Isn't that why recovery hooks are bolted closely and tightly to the frame?

Maybe I need to do some reading on the net and see if I fell victim to old 4wheeler folklore?

You did, these front receivers are strong enough to winch from.

As far as I understand you can use a receiver to tow/jerk from. Why else would they make tow hook inserts for the receiver? My only concern is that if you plan to offroad with your truck you are going to lose your approach angle by installing a front receiver.

a hitch is better for a pulling point than hooks are because it splits the force of the pull to both of your from frame rails intead of just one. the hitch is much stronger than the hooks and would probably even help in a front end collision. if you have a factory bumper your front approach angle wont be changed any because the lower bumper valance hangs lower than the frame rails. if you have an aftermarket bumper then that could be another story. i think the the ease of install, durability and streangth this is the best way to go if your going to be doing any serious tugging from the front

Not that I'm trying to start an argument here but I know of one truck (Perpetrate) here that had a front receiver on his truck and he removed it because of it limiting the approach angle. Here is a link to photos.

hey sahara,
You appear to be right, that thing sure does hang down low. Do you know if that truck has a body lift? If it does that may be a reason the reciever is the lowest hanging part.

I wasn't sure until I looked at the captions of the photos but it appears that he did't have a body lift on the truck at that time. He removed the receiver hitch before installing the body lift.

I have the same tow hooks but I haven't had time to install them. I plan to do it this week. I'll post pics as soon as I am done.

agghh thats no good. i HATE drilling anything on my trucks, and from what i gather the tow hooks require atleast 1 hole drilled on each frame rail. i dont mind cutting the lower valance for the hooks to protrude though. The hitch will def be too much of an aproach angle killer as i offroad semi-regularly. so i guess i am just plain out of luck, thanks for pointing that out sahara, you saved me over a hundred bucks and alot of frustration.

I don't mind a couple holes especially when it is for front tow hooks. Here are more pics of another way to mount generic tow hooks to a body lifted Dak, instead of the GM ones that Perpetrate installed. Again you will have to drill holes.

I guess I fell into the trap of urban legend then.

WOW those pix are wild! Did the Hummer make it through? I know the S-10 is hosed, haha.

Seeing those pix reminds me why I stopped doing that kinda stuff in trucks, :-) Now I park the truck in the serious shzit and get on the dirtbike!

I'd like to think the Hummer made it through, but I'm not sure. The pics are from a member of the Dakotausa.com Michigan Chapter which I belong to. I'll have to ask him sometime.

get a winch and mount the hooks on the winch mount, much stronger than a tow bar. and won't interfeer with your angles...I have a milemarker hydraulic on the front of my 94 dakota
