Subject: transfercase probs IP: Logged
Message: i recently shelled out the transfer case in my 93 dakota. i replaced it with a mopar case. After i put in the case, tranny fluid just keeps disapearing out of the tranny. There is always just a small drop of fluid where the tranny and the case bolt together, and it never leaked over night. Could this be the consequences of a faulty rear seal in the tranny? I was also wondering if the cavity between the tranny and the case is supposed to be wet or dry. After about 2.5 gallons of fluid, i am beginning to think there is sure SOMETHING wrong. ;)
any advice will be appreciated, thanx

Message: I pulled my '91 Dak's transfer case two days ago. There should be no fluid between the two cases. I suspect you are correct, and the output shaft seal has failed. It doesn't leak overnight because the pump doesn't create any pressure to force the fluid out. Just like a rad doesn't leak until it gets hot & pressurized.
I pulled my transfer case to get at the tranny, which I'm rebuilding. The rear seal was $7.05 if I remember correctly. Shouldn't take more than a couple hours to drop the transfer case and replace that seal.
