Message: does anyone know where to find plans for some skids that will fit a gen2 ext 4x4? i mean steel no cheesy plastic plates that just make your under carrige slik and dont protect hardly at all
Message: Do you have any lift in your truck are you at stock height? The Gen I and Gen II suspensions are nearly the same with just a few exceptions. I myself, had modified the 4” Trailmaster suspension lift kit to fit my ’88 Dakota and I would recommend to anyone who plans on installing the ’91-’96 Trailmaster kit to get the optional skid plate. The kit replaces one of the frame cross members with a replacement that sits just behind and wraps under the front differential. The replacement cross member is prone to damage as it’s the lowest part of the suspension. I’ve whacked mine on more than a few rocks, damaging it enough to require replacing it. The optional skid plate (which should have been part of the kit in the first place) connects that cross member to the lower radiator support protecting it from rocks. The other area that is prone to damage are the lift tabs for the torsion bar anchors. They tend to bend back if you high center the truck. What I did was to fabricate another cross member to support those tabs and then mounted a piece of ¼” plate steel, 21” wide by 61” long between that cross member and the front differential cross member. It gives me one giant skid plate from the front all the way to just behind the transfer case tail shaft. I have a few pictures of the new cross member in the photo albums on my website. I’ll have some additional photos in a few weeks after the DML BBQ in NY.
Note: I very frequently get email from people asking about the lift kit in my
’88. Typically, I will NOT respond the emails (about 90%) that ask questions
I’ve already covered on my web pages (ie. Where did you get the kit?, Who
makes it?, How much did it cost?, What modifications did you have to make to get it to fit your truck?. How hard was it to install? What problems did you
encounter? etc, etc...)
