Message: I grew up in that area, well Lompoc, and I have always wanted to go. A freind I Wheel with does not advise the dunes. He says that the sand really tears up on the bearings and seals. Is that true? I commute as well in my truck everyday and can't have the truck to go down on me. I power wash after muddin', does sand clean off as good? I live in the South Bay area and might be able to go some time.

Message: Never had a prob with sand, some of the people going were there last year, they had no probs. I had my 2wd '97 Dak then, so I didn't do much good then, but now, hehe!! The way I see it, mud sticks to everything, I'm still seeing it from my last big mud trip to Gorman in March!! Sand just finds it's way into everything. I go to the diy wash after every trip as well. My group teases me because I keep my truck too clean to be a 4x4. I just spent 6 hours getting all the scratches out of it from our last 4x4 trip in Big Bear by using Meguires Deep Crystal 3 step by hand. I don't think I'll be seeing bushes anytime soon, takes too long to clean the beast right :)

Message: Dude!!! you are just like me I am the same way about keeping my truck clean. No one beleives I go Muddin'. You can only find Mud under the hood. I keep the wheel wells totally cleaned and shined. My luxury is I found a 2500 psi power washer at walmart for $150. and it does a great job. I Pull it up on the front lawn get all mud off and then rake it up so it does not pile up. By the way my lawn comes back Killer in the spring you would never know. The nieghbors think I am wacked. I guess I am!!!
I am thinking about this weekend the only problem is I am on call for work. What time do you all get there and leave?

Message: Go to socaldoc@yahoogroups.com all updates are on that list. We are discussing it right now btw. All I can tell you is that we're gonna be there all weekend, from what I gathered, go down the beach about 2-3 miles, hang a left at marker 10 and go up about 1/2 mile to find our camp site. CB will be on 14. Anything else, shoot me a private note for phone #'s. I think I'm gonna have to check out Wally World for a power washer, lol

Message: Hey guys, I go to college at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo(right near Pismo) and I've heard the salt in the sand is destructive to your truck, is that true? Can it corrude any of the undercarriage or important components? If not, I'm def taking my truck out there this year.

Message: I wouldn't lose any sleep over it, unless you are trying to keep your truck in concourse condition, or plan on spending all your free time on the beach.
I also wouldn't drive in the water. That's asking for corrosion problems.
Sand in the moving parts should only be a problem if you bury the truck and then keep on burying it. As soon as you start to lose traction get off the throttle and assess the situation. Get yourself unstuck, but don't bury the wheels in the process.
You'll lose traction long before you run out of ground clearance so there shouldn't be anything other than tires in contact with the sand. Don't spin the tires and you won't throw sand into expensive components.

Message: Thanks for the info. I'm sure a fresh water wash soon after will clean the salt water off. I am still not sure if I can make it this weekend. I have heard that it is a lot of fun at Pismo. I'll know Friday if I can make it or not.
