Subject: manuel tranny and 4 low don't mix IP: Logged
Message: hit some tough stuff yesterday, big ruts and gumbo mud, was in 4 low, and feathering the clutch/gas pedal combo while being thrown around in the cab sucked, killed/stalled my engine several times. I love my 4.7 5-speed combo onroad, but yesterday, all I smelt was burnt clutch, will a lsd or locker help? or this just facts of life with a stick

IT HAS 140'000 MILES ON IT AND I JUST PUT A NEW TRANSMISSION, CLUTCH, PRESSUREPLATE, THROWOUT BEARING AND THE OLD ONE LOOKED FINE. YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHECK ON THE PRESSUREPLATE. NAPA SELLS THE CLUTCH KIT FOR ABOUT $275.00 . GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR PROBLEM G.W.

Message: just stick it in first gear and low range and let off the clutch. No gas needed, just put around wherever you want to go. not sure why you would need to ride the clutch so much.

Message: I've never done much rock crawling either, but I've seen my share of gumbo mud and ruts. I've got a '98 318 5-spd 4X4, and I'd have to agree with fst4dr. With decent tires, I put it in 1st or 2nd, let out the clutch, and never touch the clutch again till I need to stop...just let it crawl through the mud.
Just my $2/100... techniques are like opinions...everyone's got one. Just need to find out what works for you.
Good luck! The smell of burning clutch is no fun.

Message: kory, thanks, that is what I am figuring, the truck is the chariot, just got to learn how to drive it. just got to know, gumbo, huge rut or hole, first gear, four low, give it enough gas, let of the clutch, and let it climb, I can't wait to practice, hey I can't tear my truck up while I am posting, so give me another huge mudhole LOL

Message: Wow James,
Rather hard on the guy who is simply asking for pointers aren't you? I suppose you eat with that mouth too? I guess this must be your 1st time posting on the site, with the double posting and all. It's exciting huh, trying to bash on someone for no apparent reason? And when you didn't see it post right away, you attempted to do it again. Now the same poorly written post is on here twice. Lookin' GOOD Jimmy!! But as you said, "I gess a F-ing dumb -- like you just didn't know". And exactly what does, "I hope your engine blow up with your hillbilly @ss with it" mean anyway?

Message: I've used 4 low a few times on the trail, but most of the times I've seriously had to use it was pulling loaded boat trailer out of the water up some steep ramps...it was a lot easier on the clutch.

Message: I've used it a few times. Traveling down a steep and slippery slope, drop it in to 4L and hold it in 2nd. Engine braking makes for a nice well controlled descent with little to no throttle or brake input. Coming down the Pikes Peak Highway I use 4L and turn the OD off.
I've also used it to make slow, well controlled ascents of steep terrain. Keeps the engine in the power curve and the converter fully engaged (less heat production).

Message: I recently shelled out my transfercase in my 93 dakota. I replaced it with a mopar case. After i put the case in, transmission fluid just keeps disappearing out of the tranny. There was always only a small drop of tranny fluid where the tranny and case bolt together, and it never dripped out over night. Could this be the consequences of the rear seal in the trans mission? I was also wondering if the cavity between the tranny and the case was supposed to be wet or dry. After about 2.5 gallons of fluid, i am beginning to think there is sure somehting wrong ;)

Message: I use 4 low all the time... It's way easier on the whole drivetrain when you're wheeling to keep in a nice low gear. I use 4 high when I'm blasting down the highway in the winter, but 4 low for virtually ALL low speed wheelin...

Message: Only my oppinion, but, if your mudding- use 4hi for just about all your needs. 4lo is designed for heavy pulling and really bound up vehicles. If your slinging mud then you might as well have it in 4hi and not kill your clutch. Also, if your dumping the clutch to spin mud then you'll get better results in hi. Lo should only be used for stump pulling and rock crawling. My $.02.
