Subject: Tranny/T-Case replacement IP: Logged
Message: Well, I figured the past few times I've been mudding that it was only a matter of time. Today was the second time I wet out and got a gear grinding noise when in 4WD (both hi and low). It sounds to me like the T-Case chain is slipping. When I get the noise, if I hit the case, it grinds, and then I get a big JOLT when (what I think) the chain catches and the front starts pulling.
I currentlty have the 5.2L with the NV3500HD tranny and the NP231 T-Case. Right now what I'm thinking on doing is replacing the T-Case with the NP241. It should be pretty much a bolt-on install. Also, I've been looking into a rebuilt NV3500HD tranny, but all I can find along the lines of a rebuilt tranny is the regular 3500. I'm not sure what the difference is in the internals (besides SLIGHTLY different gear ratios) other than the HD is rated at 340 ft-lbs where the non-HD is rated at 300 ft-lbs.
Any comments, suggestion, or advice would be greatly appreciated. I've looked into the nv4500, but I'd rather stick with the existing space without the aditional fab work. Would like to beef-up the truck some without sacrificing my reliability. Thanks!
