Subject: independent suspension or solid axle? IP: Logged
Message: just want to know, if you guys had a choice between having a solid axle or independent, what would you guys want? im trying to figure if i should do a custom front long travel setup, or just do a regular solid axle? i dont care about jacking my truck way up in the air, just want about 5 inches of lift or so with a nice ride quality. let me know what you have to say, thanks, Steve

Message: with the ifs you will get a nicer ride , plush , like a car . But you wont get as much lift for one cause nobody makes a spindle . So to get more lift you need to extend the arms out to the sides like 3"on each side wider than stock . when you do that on the 4x you will need to extend your axles , nobody makes extended axles ......plus the angle of them will tear up the cv joints . sas will lift high and have the front diff together , your swapping something in . stronger for bigger tire size . Able to rock crawl do real 4x . ifs haul ass threw a desert , whoops and not affect the ride .......

Message: I've had many lifts of each caliber. My opinion is if you only want about 5" of lift then stay with the ifs. If you ever see youfself going big with this vehicle (such as 12" plus) then I would consider a straight axle. Good luck.

Message: Coil overs are expensive as all hell.. but better overall, if you are tight on money go with the leafs as a temporary solution i would think

Message: well, ive figured about 1100 for 4 bilstein 6100s including springs and sliders.
where and what can i get a solid axle from. i dont want to put in anything from another manuf., esp ford. i just do like that, its like a hemi in a ford, just pisses me off. so what can i use? maybe a dana or something. Thanks, Steve
