Subject: IFS Diff. Swap IP: Logged
Message: I have been reading a lot about no locker available for the 200 and up front C205F diff. Since the D35 on the 97-99 has options, can I easilly swap out the C205F from my 2001 with an earlier D35? I'm also thinking I may have to change the ratio of the D35 to 3.92?

Message: Well, to answer some of your question, your front and rear ratios have to be the same.

Message: You should not put a locker on the front unless it's never going to be driven on hardpack. It does very strange things to the handeling. It's kind of like when you have it in 4L on dry pavement - only worse.
If you're doing some serious off road work, consider an air locker. Open most of the time, and locked when you need it.

Message: The truck is a daily driver, but when I go 4 wheelin', I really go. Maybe I don't really need a locker, but I thought with the air locker "open" everything would behave normally and I would have no problems on the pavement or mild 4x4'n.
I have the Corp 9 with anti-spin 3.92 in the rear, so I thought I might spend my coins on the locker up front first, then later upgrade the rear.
Your constructive opinions are solicited.
I was out in the Sonoran Desert in Mexico a couple weeks ago following a new road being cut in as a short cut around a mountain and could not make it up a hill 3/4 of the way into road. I tried everything (except winching). I suffered a little body damage, but was more pissed about not making it up that hill! Hence the interest in the Lockers.

Message: My advice is to be patient. The new Dodge 1/2 tons use the same front axle as the 2000+ Dakotas. Because of this, I expect the aftermarket to take off fairly shortly both in terms of available ratios and lockers. Also, I completely agree that an air locker is the way to go if your truck is also a daily driver.

Message: I think after seeing some of the destruction that can happen to these aluminum housing front axles, i would stay away from the locker. From what i have seen, it looks like when you get really good traction and put some power to it, the weak link is the axle housing and it wants to shot put the ring and pinion out of the case. I would throw a healthy locker in the rear and a good set of tires. just a thought. i have a 2002 quad cab and havent found a hill i couldnt make it up, and i dont even have a limited slip.
