ok my transfer case has gone out on me. only the 4-lo though, and what sucks too is that I have 4-hi when the shift lever is in 4-hi position and the neutral position. that's what scares me. I know I have an np 231 and jeeps have an np 231. Can I just take any case from a jeep 88-00 or are there different bolt patterns and lengths to the case. I have no clue about jeeps. only dodges.

Don't even worry abught the jeeps. The dodge case you have should be a NP231D or HD. Its a beter case with beter internal parts.
The main focus should be on what when wrong with your preant case. Sounds to me to be nothing more than worn plastic bushings on the shift forks. Depending on the milage on the case you may also need by now a new chain. But I don't feel that is likely in your situation.
My advice would be to simply have your case rebuilt and enjoy your dakota.
