Subject: Wheel spacers IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2001 Dakota 4x4. I bought aftermarket wheels and they are hitting the balancing weights on the rear drums. I can think of three options:
1) remove the weights - can cause a lot of vibration
2) shave the weights - still may add vibration but not as much.
3) add wheel spacers
I think the spacers are the correct option. I only need about 1/4 inch. Does anyone know where to get spacers for our trucks? Has anyone run into this before?

Message: you cant just get spacers that are a 1/4 inch...i believe. They kinda work like adapters...you put the adapters or spacers on, bolt them to the truck then put the wheels on the spacers. The adapters have to be as wide and think as the studs on the truck.

Message: You can get wheel spacer at places like Pep Boys. They are real inexpensive but your lugs on your hub must be long enough to add the 1/4 or 5/16 spacer and still attach the wheel correctly.

Message: Yeah, I had a Grand Prix GTP that I put diff wheels on and had to go the spacer route. Was a total pain in the butt but did the job. I had to go with different lug nuts to make them work.
I wouldn't mess with the wheel weights.

Message: I never found spacers that would work. Looked everywhere. Finally I went to a local 4x4 shop and had them grind the weights down. Truck rides fine no problems. The wheels were factory size but chrome. From what I found at the time no one ahs aftermarket wheels for that truck because of teh new drum weights.

Message: I bought a american racing chrome wheels and I have the same problem there grinding on the inside of the rim. I looked for wheel spacer but no luck. They said you can attach a heavy duty wheel spacer. Take it from me, if you dont want a headache, Make sure the wheel fits correctly or if you have to modify it. Leave it as is. I spent over $1500 dollars on these wheels and tires, and I regret it.
