Message: I do assume you have a 4wd? Yes, you can get the "V8" heavy duty 2000 lb bars at the dodge dealer. Expect to pay around $150 each though...

Message: DOES ANYONE EVER THINK ABOUT A HEAVY DUTY SWAY BAR? A HEAVY DUTY SWAY BAR AND GOOD SOCKS SHOULD BE THE FIRST CONSIDERATION. I HAD A 2000 4X4 AND TOTALED IT OUT WITH ONLY THREE WEEKS ON IT. I HIT AN ICE SLICK ON A BRIDGE @ 37 MPH AND SLOWING. THE TRUCK BEGAN TO SLIDE TAIL LEFT. I HAD ALL I COULD DO TO KEEP THE TRUCK ON THR BRIDGE. WHEN I GOT TO THE OTHER SIDE, I WAS NOW 2 FEET OFF THE GROUND ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. IT WAS NO LONGER CONTROLLABLE. I WENT OFF THE LEVEE AND TOTALED IT OUT. INSULT TO INJURY THE AIR BAGS NEVER DEPLOYED AND 7 MONTHS LATTER I RECEIVED A RECALL STATING THAT THE AIR BAGS MIGHT FAIL. IF I'D BEEN HURT I WOULD HAVE SUED. BUT I WAS ABLE TO WALK AWAY FROM IT. THANK GOD!
I CHECKED MY 2001 WHEN I GOT IT. THE STOCK SWAY BAE WOULD HARDLY STABELIZE A GO CART. I REPLACED IT WITH A HEAVY DUTY ONE AND THE DIFFERENCE IS LIKE NIGHT AND DAY. IF ANY ONE IS INTERESTED I HAVE A NEAR NEW ONE THAT I'LL SELL FOR 1/3 THE COST OF A NEW ONE $50 wncorey@msn.com

Message: What about upgraded torsion bars for the 91-66 dakotas. I have a 318 in my 91 and the front has sagged pretty bad imo. If I remember correctly the front measures 23.5" high from the ground to the outer bumper mount.
Is there an better torsion bar that I can use, or should I opt for new ones

Message: Most Dakota owners, who inquire about Heavy Duty Torsion bars, do so because of front ride height issues. In essence, a torsion bar is a lateral spring that uses a twisting motion (rather than vertical compression) to carry a load. As with all springs, they will weaken over time and front ride height will be reduced.
A sway bar, on the other hand, is designed to reduce body roll in a turn. It does so by attaching to the front or rear suspension on each end and to fixed points on the frame in the center. As the vehicle enters a turn, inertia want to keep the vehicle traveling in a straight path. As the vehicle’s mass starts to turn, inertia increases downward force on the side of the vehicle opposite the turn. Hence, when you make a left turn, the right side of the vehicle wants to dip while the left side wants to rise, creating body roll. A sway bar takes some of the decrease in tension on the left side suspension and transfers it to the right side through the bar, in a twisting motion similar to how a torsion bar works. A sway bar does not increase overall ride height or weight capacity. Neither will better shocks. A sway bar does reduce suspension flex, the reason why many hard-core off-roaders don’t run them or have some sort of quick disconnect on them. However, I do agree with you that the stock sway bars and shocks are not the best quality and upgrading to better ones will improve the handling characteristics of the vehicle, but probably not the intention of the original post in this thread.
