Subject: Gearing question IP: Logged
Message: I'm about to install 33x12.50 15 tires on my 99 Dak 4x4, the tires I am
running
right now are 31 inchers ,( from Factory), my truck is a 3.9L 6 Cyl.
Automatic, I am
also installing wider wheels ,( from 15x8 to 15x10).
My question is this; should I change the gearing to 4:10 or does it really
matter
and the gearing I now have will be fine. if I don't change gearing what
will
the consequence be.
Any help would be appreciated, cause I really could use it

Message: Anytime you add taller tires you should consider going to a lower gear. Lower gears compensate for the bigger tires and give you back some power. Especially if you plan to run 33's with the six cylinder! The lower gears will help your motor turn those meats. Your truck will perform better and your engine won't have to work so hard!
What gears do you currently have? If you've got 3.92's you won't be too bad off.

Message: Ditto what Blizzard said. Although having the V6, if you dont have the 3.92's already and are going to have to change them, I would probably go ahead and get 4.10's just to make a little better use of the motors torque range. If you already have the 3.92's then you should be in pretty good shape. With 33's and the 3.92's the ratio is up to around a 3.55 or maybe a tad higher. Perfectly fine unless you are doing some very hardcore offroading like rockcrawling or such.

Message: on most dakota axles there is a sticker or white strip near the rear wheels that will have your ratio on it and if you have an open dif or not, also the size, 9 1/4.

Message: What Corey said. It should be on the rear axle near the drivers side.

Message: Just checked out the Axle , it's 3.92 gearing ,
so that means that I should be all set to mount
the 33's & 15x10's without having to install
taller gears, right?

Message: 4.10's would be even better but yes, you are in good shape with the 3.92's.

Message: I have a 95 Jeep Cherokee 2.5 Ltr. 4 cyl. 2 WD.
5 speed manual. I have a 3" suspension lift, FlowMaster exhaust, high flow air filter and everything is tuned up, plugs, wires, cap/rotor etc.
My question is: by going from 26" dia. tires to 30" will I notice much difference. All I do is short distance street driving. I don't know the ring & pinion info. I looked it up in my Haynes manual but it don't mention anything.

Message: You will notice a little bit of lost power , but with the 5-speed and such a small amount of driving you should be fine.
