Message: I found the perfect donor vehicle for a Solid Axle Swap on a dakota on Ebay. I would swipe it up myself but living in South Texas, its a little to far for me. So i thought i would let anyone closer know about it. Good Luck.

Message: A 1980 F-250 is not even close to being a good swap. It doesn,t even have a solid front axel. Let alone the fact that the assembly would be to wide to fit. If you want to put worthless f* parts into your dakota then look more at the 76 and earlier broncos.

Message: Use a dana 35 from a cherokee(pre88) or a jeep tj and use the whole front coil suspension set up. Don't cheap out or it'll cost ya later. This swap will give you a couple of inch lift in the front, so you'll need to spacer block the rear to match up.

Message: If you don't like the 35, fine, but for the average joe who wants to moderately wheel, they're fine. If you are willing to spend a little $ having a Diff cut down to fit like that, A 44 will be a good choice too, and they are a lot more affordable to the average Joe than a 60. My problem with a 60 is that they cost $1000 used (around here)then you gotta spend lots 'o' $ makin it fit. Whereas the 35 will almost bolt in, the 44 is not an expensive buy(used), And will preform really well. I think the 60 is F'ing Bionic and frankly way too much over kill, true, you'll NEVER break it, but they are really cumbersome to wheel with. That's my $0.02

Message: You guys need to get your info straight. Number 1 we are talking about a front end. Dana 35's are rear ends. yes they are a fairly crappy rear axle. The front axle of choice would be a dana 30. These are a strong axle with plenty of upgrades availbile. They can be had for about 300-400 with 4.10 gears and all your suspension items like control arms and track bars.
I plan on doing this in the next couple of months.

Message: So are you telling us that a Dana 35 is NOT a front end axle ?! Because if you are you are dead wrong. Just like you can get a Dana 44 for the front they also make a 44 for the rear , just like the 35 model.Get your facts straight before you run your trap , and especially before you consider destroying your truck as you attempt to put the weakest front end ever made under it. Good God man , at least put a 44 under it , or don`t bother.

Message: You dumb @hit you need to get your $hit staright I own 3 jeeps. There may have been a goofy front dana 35 put in some obscure jeep back in the 50's but for all wranglers the dana 35 was standard rear axle and the dana 30 was front. The only exception was the rubicon which come standard 44's front and rear. The dana 44 was optional on sport and sahra models since 1997.
So genius why dont you tell me which Jeeps come with a model dana 35 front end? I think you need to get off your daddy's computer and go back to school.

Message: DS74210X-IFS Dana 35 IFS reverse rot. all ratios
This is taken off an add for trac-lok's Tell me what IFS stands for, and why would it be a reverse rotation? Maybe because its a front axle? So dakota202 they do make Dana 35 front axles.

SOLID AXLE SWAP
What does IFS stand for?
Independent Front Suspension
Independent means not solid.....If I'm correct the axle your refering to came out of a very obscure version of the wagoneer that was made IFS for 2 years.
So I was correct there are NO SOLID AXLE FRONT DANA 35'S. Get over it people.

Message: I'm just saying that they did make a front Dana 35. Also you said that Dana 35's are rear end axles, when clearly they did make a front end also, you never mentioned anything specific about solid axles only, in your post. And try to lighten up a little the stess of getting worked up over stuff like this will kill ya, maybe some anger management classes.

Message: ok chill with the D35 talk it doesnt matter anyway. The best bet for putting a solid axle under the front of ur dakota would be to go to a junk yard and get a dana 44 out of a pre 78' bronco. After 77 they still used D44's but this model is wider. I think that the 66-77 broncos were about the same width as a dakota. This model only came with the D44 for about 5 yrs I think so make sure it is a D44 before u buy it. The D44 could be found for cheap and put under ur dakota using coils, because broncos had coil suspension up front. That would be ur best bet to balance afforability and strength.

They are the weakest POS you use for a solid axle swap you jacka$$!!
If you`re so smart why would you ever consider such a small ,weak axle.
Oh and by the way to mister-know-it-all (AKA dakota202) , pre-2000 model Dakotas used the Dana 35 IFS in the front of the 4WDs , no it`s not a solid axle , but it is a 35 and it was used on more than just a very obscure version of the wagoneer that was made IFS for 2 years.
Get a life!

Message: man tough crowd, i believe that dana 44 out of international scout or jeep wagoneer, they are close to the same width and have a 3.72 or 3.53 gear ratio making them perfect for a lock rite, if you choose to got that way, or a detroit but those come with carrier so you dont have to worry about it, but specify wether you are running stock or a 5.29 gear as carrier will be different

Message: i'll put my 2cents in since i planon doing the swap,
if you want to do a solid axle swap the easist would be to use a Dana 44 out of a pre 80's bronco, f100, the 78-79 have disk brakes and i think have the high pinion option 77 and down have drums, so since you have to swap brakes(77- down,(drums collect mud))
this would brobally be a good axle if you plan on running a gm rear axle(10-bolt and d44 outers will bolt up from what i hear and are easy to come by on 72-87 chevy truck, blazer, and burbs(73-91 blazer, burb). you can also add 8-bolt outers to a d44(from a chevy) and run a matching 14bolt ff if it suits your fancy.
I on the other hand plan onrunning a 78-79 f-100, bronco axle with a ford 9-inch rear axle. if i can 't find a 78-79 axle, ill buy a 77 and down axle and put gm outers on and run a 12-bolt rear axle.
here are some sites if you want them.
http://www.zenseeker.net/4x4/ (good site for aftermarket suspinsion on 79 and down broncos)
http://www.broncoii4x4.com/dana44/dana_44_sas.php
d44 SAS on bronco 2 (same general concept as on a dakota)
http://www.coloradok5.com/8lugconversion.shtml
8-lug converson on d44, should work on a ford d44.
oh, and a little bit of axle descriptions for the people who don't know there axles, lol

Message: Holy old thread but I'll add a comment anyhow.
I'm using Dana 60's from a 79 F350. I've seen several people use D44 Bronco and F150 front axles but they tend to snap outer shafts with larger than 35" tires and aggressive off-road use.
A D44HD from a F250 or D60 would be the best way to go.
As far as width, the D60 is only a couple of inches wider WMS to WMS than the stock Dakota front axle setup (67" vs. 65" IIRC), however I had 33x13.50 Baja Claws mounted on 15x10 rims (3" backspace) on my IFS lifted Dakota and the tires rubbed both fenders of my trailer when loading the truck. The F350 axle doner truck I picked up, had stock Ford 8-lug rims on it and I had about 2" clearance on each side when I pulled the truck onto the same trailer. With the right off-set rim, the overall track can be kept close to that ot the stock Dakota.

Message: I know I'm replying to a month old post but 44's should hold up to aggressive use with 35's. I beat the crap out of my 44 with 33's and it runs great. I was gonna do a 3/4 ton axle swap on my w150 when I put the 35's on, but I see no point as the 1/2 tons run great. Plus I got 2 spare 44's and 2 spare 9.25" rears already.
How deep can that pond possibly be?
