i'm putting a body lift & larger tires on my 96 dakota 4X4 and i was wondering how critical it was to change my gear ratio from stock. i know my speedometer will be out if i don't but that's minor to me. is there anything serious that i should be aware of?

Not really an issue unless you get carried away with the upgrade. Regearing is usually done to keep you in your powerband. (so that you won't bog out when you need the power.) If you regear, try to get your RPM to speed ratio back to stock, after the oversized tires are considered. DO THE MATH and use Exactly the same ratio in front as you do in back(really close is not good enough)this will avoid tearing your t-case out later.

It could be a issue depending on how big a tire you run. if youre going from 235 75 15 to 31s and have 3.55s you will be ok but if youre going to a 33 you should regear it if its a stick and has a small motor. the gears basically just give the truck back its RPM range.
I had a 89 GMC and it had 3.08 gears. switched to 35s and I had to regear to 4.10. could of gone 4.56 but if i wanted to switch to 33s or lower i would have to regear it since otherwise my RPMs would be too high.

thanks for the info. i am currently running on 235 75 r15 and the stock gears for a 5.2L 96 dakota 4X4 w/ an automatic tranny (not sure what the gears are). any suggestions for a 31" tire on the stock gear ratio? i'd be running at a lower rpm, but the truck's overpowered as it is and i figured it could handle it.

You don't need to regear dude. I have 3.55's and a 4.7 with 33's. Not a prob, especially if you just want to run 31's. Those aren't that big.

if youre jsut going for 31s then like Monroe said you dont need to regear. im running 33s on a 4.7 4x4 also. If you were gonna run some tall tire like a 33 with 3.11 gears and had a V6 then id say regear it but you have a big V8 so you wont feel the power loss. I thought you were gonna go to some ridiculous tire liek a 35

As I said, as long as you dont get carried away with the upsize, you'll be okay. stay 33 or less with 3.55. more than 33 and you need to go 3.92

For a six with 33's, I'd go at least to 3.92; and consider aftermarket 4.10 or 4.56 - depending on how you use the truck. Going to lower gearing will help keep up your acceleration.

Can't get 4.56 for the front 7 1/4" diff used in the 87-96 Dakota 4x4. 4.10 max. 3.92 and 33" tires work out about the same as 3.55 with the stock tire size. If you want a little extra grunt, go with the 4.10s.
