Subject: What winch should I get? IP: Logged
Message: What winches would you guys that know recommend. I have a 01 4.7 4x2 Club Cab. I run a 3 inch body lift and 32's. I like to go out running trails, but due to my work schedule I have to head out alone sometimes, or with just a friend and I in my truck. Anywayz, IF I ever get stuck (bound to happen), I may have to pull my own a$$ out of the mud.
What's a good brand and how big do you think I need. Thanks!

Message: I have a warn M8000 winch on mine. with a warn transformer brushguard winch mount kit. It pulls out pretty much any truck I come across. it pulls the dakota out of some good stucks also. I got it stuck one time in some gooey mud just to see if it would pull me out. It did pretty easily.
The whole brushguard/winch mount and winch cost me about 1300$. Only got to use the winch 3x cause I dont have time to go off road anymore.
Im also thinking of selling it

Message: I use the Warn HS 9500 on my Hanson bumper.
Works for me pretty good.
Only have used it for others so far not for myself yet.

LOL yeah looks exactly like that. Mine isnt chrome though and I have the wrap around headlight guards on mine. Mine is the black one.
I dont like the roller fairlead ( more things to break IMO) so I run the normal hawse fairlead.
I jsut added tow hooks to mine. I went and got some of those regular tow hooks. the nice thing is they bolt on to the 2 holes near the edges with no drilling. I took one of them off and ran a ford f 350 tow loop eye on one side.
I jsut dont go 4 wheeling anymore ( too busy with work) and plan on selling the whole thing pretty soon
IMO a 8000 pound winch is about all you need for a Dakota sized vehicle. If you can afford a bigger 9-9500 K winch by all means go for it but I found out the biger winches ( I used to run a platinum 9500 Ramsey) tends to pull really really hard and can mess up things in a hurry

Message: Sorry to bring up such an old post, but if I search anymore threads, my brain will be oozing out my ears! Anyway, the picture above by Piranha is (was) the set-up I was really after. Warn does not make their trans4mer in chrome anymore for the dakota and as yet no stainless option either. I am just not sure what black will look like on my SLT bumper, lots of chrome! Warn seems to be my only option for a grill guard/winch option. So now I am looking into Hanson's bumper. I know FourxFore has this bumper and it looks great! Hanson's site says they ship them bare or powder coated. FourxFore's looks like it matches his lower paint pretty close. They also have lots of options, lights, recessed or protruding, grill guard etc. Sorry for the long post, any and all replies and opinions are welcome, I want to get it right the first time. Thanks.

Message: mine is a SLT with the chrome bumper and grille and the transformer doesnt look bad at all. you can always get one and have it painted/powdercoated white or take all the pieces and have them chromed. Either way its still cheaper than the hanson bimper I believe

Message: Oops! I guess my brains are already oozing!LOL It is ForexFour, not the other way around. My apologies to the MAN! I saw a product by Tal and Hadas. Anyone heard of them. I really like their stainless bull bar with a couple of lights mounted, and I still might be able to mount the warn winch below. Thanks for the reply Rob, got any pics?

Message: FYI,
Mine was powder coated in a closley matching color. It had to be clear coated.
The bumper is costly but is very strong and I never worry about anything I pull any longer.
I replaced the 5/16 Cable with the Amsteel 5/16 rope.
It is rated at 13400 lbs almost 4000 lbs stronger than the Cable and it wont build up any recoil, if it snaps it take anyones head off. It will just drop to the ground.

Message: does anyone have a pic of the trans4mer by warn in black and with the headlight guards? Also how much was it and does it matter that it is only available for the 4wd considering im 2wd ... I thought the frame was probably the same???

Message: hey all, talked to Hanson enterprises yesterday, and my bumper should be ready in about 6 days. The prices on the websight are a little outdated, Wayne Hanson let me know that when I ordered it. Can look at anywhere from $1000 to $1600 for it, plus shipping. Wayne told me that he prefers not to put any finishes on the bumpers, causes too many hassles. So figure on it being shipped as straight metal.

Message: Why is the Hanson Bumper sooo expensive? I would think that you could get a custom bumper made for cheaper.
Also where did knobbyman go? His website doesnt work anymore and I want to ask him about his rear bumper that he had made in dallas.

Message: I was just about to look for a post on winches. Nice to stumble across it so easily. My question is, how big a tree do you need to pull ourself out of a sticky situation? Since I live in AZ, I don't have many anchoring points for the winch, so Im not so sure its worth buying. There are some trees (mesquite) and they're about 3 or 4 inches diameter, so Im scared that wont hack it. It wont get into mud (refer back to AZ) it would be more for sand and hills I don't get enough traction for. Wish saquaros weren't so protected. Id probably go to jail for winching one of them.

Message: For sand get a pull pal or you can bury your spare tire to use as an anchor. Best is to wheel with a buddy so his truck can be used as the anchor.
