Subject: Front Axle on 2000 & up 4x4's IP: Logged
Message: Just on case anyone was wondering, I found out that the 97 to 99 Daks (not sure about earlier ones) have Dana 35 front axles. But for 2000, Dodge started using Chrysler 8 inch front axles. Bigger and much stronger than the Dana 35. This means we have a drivetrain on our trucks that is stronger than most fullsize trucks available today with the 9 1/4 rear and 8 inch front. Just thought that everyone might want to know. Also since this is a Chrysler front, your only choice in gear ratios right now is the 3.55 and 3.90,1,2 (aftermarket that is)for now. I'm sure that the aftermarket crowd will have some out soon enough. If and when lift kits become available, then we should really see some new gears as guys start lifting and adding bigger tires. Dana 35 models can get a 4.10 and I think a 4.56. Most gear shops that I have spoken with dont know about the new front end. Randys ring and pinion does have the 3.90 front and rear. I plan on getting them as soon as possible.

Message: Yeah Art, the c205mm. Supposedly a Chrysler but may be a corporate. Either way, strong a$$ drivetrain. I am thinking of putting a locker of some kind in my rear axle and putting the lsd from it in the wifes 4x4 Durango (it has an open rear ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!)

Message: Funny how you can find stuff if you just do a search...
I was at a 4X4 shop in town today asking about gear swaps. The shop's driveline guy looked at my front end and said that it looked exactly like a Dana 35. I don't know because I've never looked at one. But I also know that DC says it's a Corporate 205mm Axle. Is the C205 a copy of the Dana 35? If it is, then there are more gear choices available. But I also called Randy's Ring and Pinion and they only show OEM gears available in 3.55 and 3.90.
Anybody know the ground truth?

Message: On 2000 and up, they are the newer 8 inch. Different than the dana 35. You are right. The only thing available for 2000 up is either 3.55 or 3.90. 97 to 99 can also get 4.10's. 3.90's from Randys is what I am going with as soon as I get the $$.
