Subject: U-Joint Question IP: Logged
Message: Were getting a pop/clank noise and a jerk sensation when the Dak is moving slow, 5-15 mph. The U-Joints are rusty and the back set was hot on one of the four joints.
Could the pop\clank noise be the U
-Joints?

Message: Thats exactly what it is... Some of my 4x4n buddies with their ford broncos which have high driveline angle get this very often.... If your u-joint has a grease nipple, grease it for a temp fix, but really you should replace it. As long as its just the joint (should be) then it'll be around $45 Can (thats what the big ford and chev ones cost).

Message: Not for the fords that I've done it on... Infact we once replaced one with just a cresent wrench, a screw driver, and a hammer (some times they get pretty jammed) infront of the cop station :).
But again, never looked at the dodge ones. To make your job easier put the t-case into neutral, that way you can spin your rear driveshaft if you jack the rear end up allowing you to get at all the caps on the yoke/ujoint assembly.

Message: Looks like I need new U-joints. Anyone know what would be good brand to use for the 2000 Dak 4 x 4. I'm thinking ones with a lub fitting would be best.
Thanks for your replies.

Socket trick
U-joint removal
I used to use a big C-clamp and two 1/2" sockets in place of the tool shown (finally broke down and bought it ;). One socket's cup must be large enough for the U-joints cup to slide into and the other socket's outside diameter must be the same as the U-joint cup or a little smaller. You will tighten the C-clamp on the smaller diameter socket pressing the U-joint out into the larger socket. I don't like to hammer on the d-shaft, might screw up the balance but these 'how tos' show them beatin on them, who knows, LoL.

A pretty handy U-joint/Ball joint tool
