Subject: 2wd rear-end swap with 4wd IP: Logged
Message: It is my understanding that the 4wd dakotas have either limited slip or pos- traction rear ends. I have a 2wd dakota that will break traction in a pot hole. Can I take the entire back axle off of a wrecked dakota 4wd and put it under my 2wd. Is the rear end of a 4wd worth the trouble? I really dont have the $ to buy lockers for my truck. My truck is a 97, 3.9L and I believe it has a 3.55 rear end. Please help me with any info.

Message: Just get the diff of the 'wrecked' one.... You can take the posi out and put it in yours, but you'll be using those gears.... A new posi alone is supposed to be under 500 according to my friend (for a 9" ford)

Message: it depends on which rear end you have. lots of 2 wheel drives had the 8 1/2 inch rear and most if not all 4x4s had the 9 1/4.
To tell you the truth youre better off jsut buying a loc rite for your truck its abotu 350$.
I had to buy a Used/new axle for my 4x4 and it ran me 700$.

Message: Mine's a 4x2 and I just bought a 8.25 Mopar posi unit off e-bay for $250. Along with a 4.10 gear I'm pretty happy with it. I think all together with install was around $800.
Wouldn't want any other!

Message: Actually it's a very lucky few who have the 9.25" rear ends. Most trucks (both 2WD and 4WD) have the 8.25".
