Subject: Tires IP: Logged
Message: I have narrowed my search for tires down to BF Goodrich All Terrain or their Mud Terrian. What do you guys/girls think? Do you all think there is much difference with gas mileage?

Message: Good question. I know that the BFG A/T tire is 3-ply sidewall, and the Mud Terrain is 2-ply. The ONLY 3-ply sidewall tires that are worth using are the BFG A/T's and the GoodYear Mud Terrain MT/R tires.
I have the BFG's A/T tires and I will never switch to another - they are real nice performers and look good too. I have 31x10.5" tires. They are also the best selling A/T offroad tire around. The big desert racing Baja trucks use the same BFG tire, or the Baja tire. You can get them with a written 40,000 mile warranty, too, which is unheard of for an "offroad" tire!

Message: I have owned both in the last 8 months. The Mud Terrain is a 3 ply as well as the AT. Always has been. I like them both. The Mud terrain is a little bit noisier on the road and doesnt last quite as long as the AT, The AT is a little better on wet roads. The MT has better tracion off road but I can go almost as many places with the AT's with a little finesse. I would recomned the AT's but the MT's are great as well.

Message: I have 33x12.5 BFG Muds on my YJ. They are 3-ply and can take a beating. The tread pattern is decent and limits road-noise but is still a little more noise than their A/T. I bring 'em down to 13-14PSI all of the time when crawling and have had no problems with them. Burly damn tires. Still a radial so the ride is pretty good. Go Muds, I think the tread pattern looks cooler too :-).

Message: I called a couple local dealers asking them if the Mud tire is a 2-ply or 3-ply. The first guy I talked to said "for sure" its a 2-ply. But, the next two places I called said they "know" its a 3-ply.
I will bet you guys are right, I'll bet it is a 3-ply!

Message: If you are going for just looks and not performance go with the Muds, they look cooler. If it is performance you are after, then ask yourself how much offroading you plan to do and what type you plan to do. I have the A/T's and have yet to get into trouble because of the tires. I also am aware of the tire I have and wheel accordingly. I like them also because they are lasting alot longer then any mud tire I have ever had. If you plan to do alot of offroading then go with the Muds.

Message: I have 30K on my BFG Muds and they still have a ton of meat left on 'em. Some recommend getting them scythed (?), don't do it. It will run your tire down faster but in that defense, it will give you a little better traction on ice or slippery surfaces. The ride is still great on the Muds, I could hardly notice a difference between it and the A/T's ride because BFG did their homework. On-road or off-road I'd have to recommend the BFG M/T.
Oh, and since mine say "tri-wall", I'm bettin' they're three-ply :-).

Message: I've heard about getting your mudders siped for better traction on wet surfaces. Mudders are not good on wet streets, icy or snowy conditions. If you drive in these conditons, you will probably want an all terrain. Generally, you won't get a mileage guarantee on a mudder. I say generally because you will get one with mudders sold at Pep boys, but I don't know how good they are. Hope that helps, thats just my experience with tires.

x16 on my 03' 4x4 dakota reg cab?
i make my living in tahoe summers off-road and want improved
traction M/Ts ,however the strange choice dodge made to
retangleize the fender wells make filling the hole with rubber a
night-mare even though there SEEMS to be tons of space .
Has anyone outthere beat this weak link to an otherwise exellent
back woods beauty?do i HAVE to "monster garage" the brand
new dodge?

Message: In all honesty I really wouldn't waste my time with a set of BFG A/T's I would dig deeper and find a real all terrain tire that is an actual all terrain tire.
From past expirences with these on my Chevy Silverado, they aren't as great, also rocks tend to get wedged in the tread cause of the tight tread pattern.
I would go find you a good set of Sidewinder A/T's for a lower price, or if you aren't concerend about money, a Mickey Thompson A/T tire would be a nice choice.
Infact the Mickey Thompson A/T would be my firest choice if i was going to go with one, but on the other hand the BFG Mud Tire is good, infact almost 99% of jeeps you see around use them, cause they are a great offroad tire for what you pay.
Go witht he Muds, or find you a better A/T.

Message: I have an 83 GMC Jimmy that I use for a mountain truck. When I got it, it had BFG AT's on it. An excellent all around tire with good road manners. But I switched them for MT's because I use the truck more for off-road than general driving. It is noisier, and the ride is rougher. Traction in mud and heavy snow is much better, but ice and wet pavement traction is a little worse. I'v not siped them. For off road in the COlorado Rockies, I think it's a better tire than the AT's.
My Dakota is my daily driver and long distance cruiser. Last fall I put Michelin MTX's on it. I find that to be an excellent tire. Driven through some very nasty weather in the last month without any difficulties. Also a smooth and quiet street tire with excellent wet and ice traction.

Message: Just to put in my $.02, I recently (2 mos ago) switched from BFG AT to the Yokohama Geolander AT. They have been better on snow and ice and are much quieter than the BFG's. The Yokos seem to have more flex when cornering, but I also went up a size from 31's to 32's. I have been very happy with them so far. They also cost me about $100 less for the set. Unless you are a serious off-roader, don't waste your money on MT's, you'll hate them. They cost more, handle worse on the road, don't last as long, and are noisier.
