Subject: Ford keys? IP: Logged
Message: Will ford f150 torsion bar keyways work on a dodge dakota? ive seen people put them on an ifs chevy/gmc before and it raises it another 2-3" than stock keyways. if anyone could help me out that would be great.

Message: It just doesn't matter. With your stock torsion bars, you can adjust them to the point that the upper bumpstop will bottom out (provided the torsionbars are not worn out). THIS is as high as you can go. I don't care if you put on Ford bars or V-8 bars on a V-6 (I'm not sure there is even a difference). Once the bumpstop bottoms out, you are done. You are doing nothing more than over stressing the bars.

I'll type slow so you can understand the words what is coming out of my mouth.
1. Put a floor jack in the center of your front cross member.
2. Raise the vehicle to the point that the front wheels start to come off the ground.
3. Look at the upper control arms (the wish-bone shaped piece that connects from the frame to the spindle)(the spindle is that piece of metal behind your disc brake that rotates when you turn the stearing wheel). If you look from the rear of the tire, you will see there is a rubber piece that is being smashed underneath the upper control arm. That is your upper bumpstop and it is what limits how high you can go with the front end as far as making adjustments to the existing suspension setup. I don't care if you are trying to swap out keyways or torsion bars, once you reach the max "droop" on your suspension you are done.
4. You can maintain this ride height by simply following your torsion bar (that is the black piece of metal that is about three feet long going from the lower control arm back to the middle part of your frame) back to its adjustment bolt and then tighten it until you get that bumpstop bottomed out (trust me, most will do it, there is enough adjustment there).
5. This will save you from spending money on parts you don't need, ie. Ford keyways. Use the money saved to put towards a suspension lift (assuming you have already put in the body lift). After all, don't we all want to go as high as we can afford? Or is that me just thinking out loud again?

Not pickin', just getting the facts out. Nobody knows everything, but you can learn a lot just layin' under your rig doin' the work yourself.

Message: He does have a point. Both of you that is. Putting Ford Keys into a Chevy allows you to crank up the torsions with out losing all of your ride. I personally only have a 2wd dak, but I work for an off-road shop. I don't know how many times I have swapped keys out on chevys for ford keys. On the Dodge keys, isn't the adjustor bolt litterally running through the key? If so, a ford (or chevy for that matter) key wont work.
