Subject: Torsion bar crankage IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99' single cab 4x4 and do not want to pay thousands for a suspenion lift. I was woundering about cranking my torsion bars 2 inches and putting a 2 inch block in the back. I wanted to know the pros and cons to this method. Also if i did this and added a 2 inch BL would that clear 33s?

Message: ive got an 01 dakota with a 3 inch body lift and the bars cranked. you wouldnt clear 33's without doing a lot of trimming. ive only got 1 inch blocks in the back of mine, and my bars are cranked about an inch and a half. i dunno if i would go 2 or not because thats just about maxing the bars out. the ride will get ruffer the more you crank them. ive heard of people never having problems with them cranked all the way, and ive heard of people to have problems with things wearing out because of the angle the bars put the shafts and stuff at. so i guess its youre call. me personally, i wouldnt go a full 2 inches. whats everyone else think?....

Message: With a 2" tb crank and a 2" body lift you will be able to run 33" tires. As far as the tb's go maxing them out will wear parts out faster than normal. But it is the parts that you usually wear out by running bigger tires anyway. I just lifted my front enough to level it off. I don't have any blocks or anything in the back however.

Message: So.....with my 1 1/2 inch torsion crank and then if I put a 2 inch body lift on I could fit 32x11.50 without much problem? Seems like it would work, what ya'll think?

Message: They will rub the frame at full turn unless you get wheels with less backspacing, but yes they will fit with the setup you're talking about.

Message: Have you tried adjusting the stock keys 1st? No sense in wasting hard earned cash if you can reach the upper bump-stops with the stock keys. Doesn't cost a thing to try what you already have.
Since the factory wheels have a 5 or 5.5 backspacing the 4.5 wheels would work fine.
You won't have other problems...other than a slightly stiffer ride.
If you incorporate the body lift, you will have to:
* cut out the lower portion of the fan shroud (or go electric fans)
* If Auto trans possibly lengthen your shifter rod (or hammer out some of the bends)
* lengthen your transfer case shifter (can be done with a threaded sleeve and a bolt with the head cut off).

Message: I cranked my stock torsion keys and got about 2 inches of lift out of it now the back sits a inch lower than the front i was thinking of putting 4 inch blocks in the back and then get the PA 3 inch body lift so it would sit level besides the things u listed above ive heard u have to extend brake lines is that true ?

Message: My experience is with the 2" body lift. You may have to, I don't know. With 4" blocks you will need to reposition the brake hose bbacket that goes to the rear end.

Message: brandon,
If you have maxxed out the adjustment bolt (it is screwed all the way in) and your upper control arms are still not coming into contact with the upper bumpstops, the two choices you have are to:
1. Replace the torsion bars
2. replace the keyways with aftermarket (re-indexed) keyways.
People have stated on here they have experienced the problem you state, but I have never actually seen it happen myself.

Message: i have an 04, at first i put in the after market key and cranked them up to about 2.5 inches. bad idea the ride is very stiff (rideing on the upper snubs) and if you have high miles then say goodbye to your ball joints. after that i lower the front to about 1.5 to 2" better ride with a 1.5 block in the rear and still had a good ride height. as for the discussion about backspacing and rubbing i put on a set of black rock soft 8s, these had a 4.5 backspace which widened my stance for a good look. they were raped with 265\75\16 and i needed to trim just a little off the front lip of each front wheel well.
