Subject: Off roading on the beach IP: Logged
Message: I'm just back from 2 weeks vacation on the Outer Banks in NC. Best thing about it was the chance to take my QC 4x4 on the beach. It's fun cruising past all of the soft roaders bogged down due to low ground clearance! I didn't even have to deflate the tires.
The thing I want to know is............What should I check for now I'm back? Is there anything I should look at, in case there is sand where it shouldn't be? I'm new to the Dodge, (a 2002) and also to off roading, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Funniest thing I saw was a New trailblazer being pulled out of the sand by an ancient Ram 4x4. It may have the best straight 6, but it can't take soft sand for sh*t...........

Message: After any trip off-roading the best thing to do is give your truck a good cleaning. Wash off all the stuff underneath your truck, ie axles, trasfer case, tranny, brakes, and anything else that could have gotten sand in it.
Also, especially after the beach, wash the underneath of your truck. Salt loves to rust up the underneath of your dakota.
Then you might want to pop your airbox and check out your air filter and filter box to make sure their is no sand in it. Vacuum out what you can. Change oil too if you do A LOT of dune and sand running just to make sure the oil and the oil filter hae no sand to help ruin your engine.
After all that, give your trucks body a quick wash to take off any harmful stuff that could be on the body(salt, mud, sand).
Then you should be totally covered.

Message: Ya, if you were too lazy to air down the tires I'd wager you were running along the hard packed surf line gettin into some good salt or you were going like a bat outta hell in the soft stuff. Prolly got sand & salt up the wazoo. Best to pressure wash the undercarriage, suspension, engine bay, & all the nooks & crannys that will conceal the oxidation process from a cursory glance. Next time take the time to air down so you don't have to beat the snot out of your ride.

Message: yeah, i 3rd the power washer. if at all possible, get the truck up on a lift so you can get under it. just like when you go swimming at the beach, you know that sand can, and does get everywhere. make sure to hit the engine compartment, body joints, suspension, and inside the bumpers. it would probably be a good idea to take the tires off the axles and give all that a good cleaning too.

Message: Pressure washing is recommended. Removing the tires is a good idea as well.
Once dry crawl up under and start poking around looking for trouble. I usually do a ball joint check as well by jacking up each side by the control arm to release pressure on the BJ's and then check for play by trying to move the tire side to side and up and down. Check the plastic boots for cracks. Check the rack for leaking. Anything that looks questionable I take to get looked at. Preventative checks will save you lots of money!
