hey guys, it's been a loooooong time since i've been here. mostly because i traded my dakota for a jeep wrangler. i have to admit, i'm more than pleased with the wrangler. but i do miss teh dak incredibily. it was always an attention getter. from what i heard, it was sold to someone else the very next day after i traded it. i guess i did a good job in making it a great re-seller. just curious, has anyone owned a jeep or now owns one after or before owning a dakota? What's ur opinion on both?

Nice to see ya here again Chax.
My dad owns a WRangler. For a bigger guy like me, the thing is too damned small. I feel extremely cramped behind the wheel, more so than my old Jeep Commanche, and I'm always hitting my elbow on the door.
Not to mention the lack of any kind of cargo capacity, the wrangler is just no good for me.
Now, if Jeep would be nice and keep the straight 6, and reinvent the Commanche (kinda along the lines of an '02 Dakota with a more Jeep front end), I'd go back to Jeep. But, since they are dumping the best engine they ever had, and the only thing new is the Scrambler, I'm gonna stick to my 4x4 QC.

But it's nice to hear you're having fun.

Well, the jeep is indeed small...but i have found that it has been much more roomier than my regular cab dak..that's for sure. I do agree with u about the lack of elbow room....i just can't seem to find a good resting spot for my elbow so i just hold onto the bar above my head. Driving without the top off road is literally awesome. Althought my dak was 2wd, lifted nearly 8 inches, and had the best tires around (along with a powertrax in the rear) this jeep went further even stock. (so far, i got it up 2 inches and running 31 inch mud terrains from futura)

Well, i'll always miss the dakota (i got the spare key hanging on my wall as a reminder)and if i ever see the owner, i'll congrats him/her for owning such a great truck.

I think more than anything it's a preference thing. I LOVE Jeep's, but they can be wuite impractical if you have to haul around loads of dirt or wood or stuff that you really need a bed for.

If however you are just looking for an off-roading machine, the Jeep is the best way to go. With a locker, some shocks, maybe a gear change and some nice 31" tires you could go just about anywhere fairly easily if you pick a good line. Parts for a jeep are way cheap too. A gear change on a dakota 4X4 runs usually about $600 for parts, and gears change for a Jeep is about $425. Lockers are a bit cheaper, and lifts are WAY cheaper then dakota lifts, for the price of teh rancho 3" lift for our dakotas, you could get an AWESOME lift of a jeep that would make it kick ass off-roading. Plus the solid front axle definitly is better suited for off-road and in the case of his picture, jumping. Jumping a dakota can be very dangerous since the control arms/axles go from /=\ to \=/or swing up more irratically than a soilid axle that goes from === to === in a jump. So basically, in a jump with an Independent front suspension, the strain goes on the axle shafts, and in a solid axle/Jeep set-up, the strain goes on the shocks and springs, where it's supposed to be.

So basically it's a preference thing, i'd get a jeep in a heart beat if they were the right thing for me, but right now the right thing is a dakota, and that isn't such a bad thing.

Well, i seriously do not recommend you jumping a jeep. what you don't see in those pix is another guy who launched his 2000 cherokee. stock jeep axles are weak and he learned this the hard way. his wheels now are slanted inwards from the impact of the jump. Since my jeep was a 4 cylinder, i landed on all 4 wheels very smoothly and the impact was spread to all 4. He landed on teh front and totally killing his axle. kids: do not attempt this at home. Haha....i would say a dakota with independent front suspension will have a safer landing because what happens on one side doesn't affect the other since it's all independent. Take a jeep and jump it, and when u land on the right side, it goes up, and the opposite side goes down..huge stress on components. Like real author said, it's based on preferences on what u want. if you haul, dakota comes in first, if you wheel, jeep will do the job best. if you jump, i recommend u buy a pre-runner :) Yes a jeep is cheaper in the parts category, for instance, i can fit 33's with just 2 inches of lift while a dakota would take 3 inches plus some trimming and new offset rims. Lift kits are waay cheaper than the dakotas as well. Mostly because there is a higher demand for jeep parts than dakotas.

Wasn't it Knobbyman that jumped his Dak and tore the front end apart?

And there is a rumor floating the internet that the JEeps are going IFS in a year or two.

Is there any other way DC can ruin a great line of trucks?

how about we all group together and save Jeep from a fate worse than Ford.

Hey all-

Actually I am on my third Jeep as we speak. It is a 1967 CJ 5 with a three speed tranny and the Buick V6. I bought a year ago to just play around with but haven't had much time.

My first Jeep was a 89 Wrangler YJ with a 5 speed and the 2.5 4 cyc. motor. I only had 31" BFG ATs on it but it when through everything.

My second Jeep was a 99 Wrangler TJ Sahara Edition (hence the username on this board). I ordered this Jeep from the local dealer with all the extras. It had both the hard and soft tops, 4.0 engine, 5 speed tranny. I also ordered the upgraded suspension and conveniences like the upgraded battery and alternator. The jeep also had the Dana 44 axles with 4:10 gears. About six months after I bought it I put 31" BFG ATs on it. This jeep was even better offroad and onroad than my 89 YJ.

I sold this Jeep in the fall of 2000 and bought my 01 Dak QC 4x4. I bought the Dak because I had a baby on the way and I wanted something with a little more room.

Don't get me wrong I love my Dak but I really miss my last Jeep. Especially on the nice summer days when I would love to drop the top (but I can't in my Dak!).

The only problem I ever had with any of the Jeeps was the space. Not much there. However I plan to order a new one in a year or so just to have as a toy.

I picked up a '98 Wrangler this spring. 4" susp lift, 3" body lift, and 35x12.50 rubbers. Jeeps have a very big cool factor. lol

I still have the Dak, too. ;o)

First "Jeep" was a 1982 AMC Eagle 4-door sedan. AWESOME car! (and it should have been ,seeing as how most of the engine/tranny/running gear was stock Jeep stuff).
2nd was the 89 Commanche
3rd was a 96 Grand Cherokee
Then Jeep went bad and I'm driving a Dak!
After this, I'll probably just build my own truck. Hummers are too expensive (not to mention huge, heavy, and unwieldly), and both Jeep and Dakota are going in directions I personally don't like.

Yeah, i agree....trucks and suv's are being made only for the on-road purpose.....kinda sucks. solid axle vehicles will long live as the best 4 wheeling machines built.

chax, we may be competitive but we're not crazy, we all know what a jeep can do.
