Subject: Tow Hooks, Whre to get 'em IP: Logged
Message: OK, I just got my truck a month ago and the urge to offroad is in me (I am the one who almost got stuck in my garden)... so in order to go offorad I need a way to tow my truck, or my buds ranger (unlikely he is on 35" TSL swampers) out of the rough. So where is everyoine buying thier towhooks ( I cannot seem to find the ones that used to sell for about $9-$10 on a store shelf anywhere) and how is everyone mounting them both front and rear. Pics and testimonials that it works would be great.
Thanks,
Chris

Message: To my knowledge, there aren't any towhooks out for the Kotas. I don't have any on my truck yet either. But I've seen several posts where guy's have made custom brakets to drop down from the frame 3" then bolted towhooks to them. They stick out of the factory holes in the front facia. I've also read where people with the 3" body lift can easly slied a set of factory GM front towhooks to the frame.
Do a quick search for "towhooks" and I'm sure you'll find pleanty of posts about this topic. And most likely find a few pics/drawings of setups.

Message: Oh yeah, and I forgot to address the rear towhook issue. I found the quickest and easiest fix in an offroading mag. Well, that is if you have the tow package or an aftermarket hitch (not a ball on the bumper). Just take the end of your tow strap and loop it...make about a 6" round loop. Take the hook on the end an hook it to the strap. Then flatten the loop out so you can stick it into your reciever (you'll need to remove the drop bar). Then take your pin that's used to secure the drop bar, and slide it into the loop of the tow strap that you just inserted. Then pull it tight. Quick, free, and strong tow point. The only downside is that it will be your only rear towpoint and is smack dab in the middle of the truck. But it's gonna be strong, so it shouldn't be too big a problem.

Message: I did a search and did not find where people are actually buying what they have used. I saw a couple set-ups with custom brackets, but none of these seemed able to hold much load. They seemed like they would flex and bend if you used the hook.
Are the dodge ones able to be purchased from a dealer and easily installed at home?

Message: Chris,
Look for Knobbyman when you're searching.
The plans for the brackets are on his site.
If you have an '03 though, you're better off
using the plans as a go-by and then cutting a
test out of thin plywood and modifying it from
there. I have an '03 and the brackets don't
work (I should have made the test bracket
first.)
I have the hooks and brackets that have been
fabbed out of steel including mounting bolts
for sale BTW if they do fit.

Message: If you're going to do a Body lift then some people have been buying....gulp...GM truck hooks...they'll mount in the left over frame holes. I have the part number if you need them. I'm going to get to it one of these days.

Message: Yeah, I have an '03 and saw that the mounts knobbyman made did not look like they would fit... So where are all of you getting the hooks in the first place?

Message: THe walmarts near me don't carry them... neitehr does the NAPA autozone or advanced auto parts... Guess I am jsut cheap and don't want to pay $8 shipping on 3-4 $7 tow hooks.. though I did find them in summit last night.. I'll probably get them from there...

Message: I am the one who found Chevy 1/2 ton tow hooks work with a body lift. I like the fact that the strap does not fall off the hook when tension is lost. OSH has the $10 hooks but the bolts might be to long for the 1/2" braket you will have to make.
