Subject: NP 231 interchangability? IP: Logged
Message: Need to replace the 231 in my 88 3.9 Dakota due to a cracked case(thanks to a u-joint failure).
Does anyone know what other vehicles came with the right input/output shaft dimensions and spline counts? Basically, what will bolt right in and work as good(or better :D) than the NP231 that's in there now?
Thanks for any help!

Message: I had an 87' Dakota with the 3.9L in it. A busted u-joint also caused my case to crack. It bent the output shaft, too. The t-case in my 87' was an NP207. My brother in law had an 88' 3.9L Dakota that no longer ran and he let me have it. I took the NP231 out of it and it bolted right into my 87'. If I remember correctly, the only part I had to modify was the t-case shift linkage. It needed to be a little longer. I would venture to say that if these two different t-cases bolted in place of each other, then two NP231's, within close years, would also do the same.
Be careful when you pull out your old t-case, and also when install a new one, that you don't damage the seal at the back of the trans, around the trans output shaft. The trans will leak like a S.O.B. if you damage it. Good luck.
