 Subject: Dakota help ASAP - Tire Rub

I'm looking at a Dakota right now..
99 club cab
5.2
3" rancho lift
2" body lift
33x12.5(probably 12.5) superswampers
the driver's side rubs at full turn right at the sheet metal / inside the fender.
Everything looks leveled, no accident of any sort.
Any ideas?

You need rims with less Backspacing. 12.5 wide on stock rub in the frame at full turns. You lifts do not correct this. If you already bought new rims with a BS of less than 4.5" or so that should have fixed the problem but this also sometime makes rubbing at other points in the fender well.

even if you have 4.5" of back space, if the rims are 10" wide you'll get rub. mine rub just slightly but i only have a 3" body lift. my recomendation is to crank up your torsion bars two full turns minimum.

Why does it rub on one side and not the other though?
Someone else suggested that when the guy put the body lift on he didn't even it out properly..

I just put a 3" body lift on my 97 Dakota, and I get quite a bit of rub on both sides. How do you determine the backspacing?

I posted this on another board but it may help you understand whet is happening. Why one side and not the other, Good question but I have heard that all trucks can have up to 2" difference from specs.
I too had one side rub more than the other. Your lifts should not have made this problem. Bottom line is that 12.5" wide tires rub on the frame on stock rims.
Here is how I plotted out what rims and BS might work good. Not sure if you have done this but this may help seeing the difference in the BS and the rim size. using a 16x8 as an example
On paper draw a fixed position line in the center of the page, from top to bottom. Then from the line measure back the amount of BS for Stock, 5.5" then measure forward of the line the rest of the rim width 2.5". this is 8" total so that is the rim and how it sits on the hub. Now add the rest of the tire width left to each side by dividing the left over width 4.5" if you are using a 12.5 wide tire so that would be 2.25" on each side. This is a approximation of how the tire should sit. Now do this for each of the different rim sizes and BS you would like to use and you will see how much further or closer the tire will sit in the well. Also you know the less the BS the moore it sticks out from the well. This will also change the tire swing angel in turns which will affect where your tire will rub if the tires are out to far or to wide or just plain to big. Confused??!!! Sorry but it works. I ploted the 15x7 rims with 5" of BS and I think I may have a shot at clearing my 12.5's on the GEN II rims I let some one borrow. WHen I get them back I am gonna mount one to see.

I understand, but it doesn't rub on the frame but on the outer wheel-well / sheet metal, like right outside. It rubs whenever the tire is turned with the edge of the super swamper on that corner where sheet metal/wheel well meet.

I posted the info for Mike since he asked.
I understand where your rub is and it is pretty common if your torsion bars are not raised a little but with your 2" of body lift I would think it would clear. Are you running stock rims or custom? Less BS of stock 5.5 will change rubbing from the inside of the well to the outside when turning since you change the turn radius making your tire stick out further than stock. This is why I could not run 32x11.5x15 on AE 589's with 3" rancho.

I'm going to double check the backspacing when I go and see the truck again tonight and let you know.
I understand why it rubs, but don't understand why it does it on one side while the other one is ok.
