Subject: Shift into 4 wheel drive IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1997 Dodge V8 Dakota and I have no idea how to shift it from 2wd into 4wd, can anyone help? I don't want to destroy the transmission. Also, is there a way to tell if you are in 4wd ?

Message: Look in the manual. I have a 97 V8 5 spd, and put simply, to shift 2wd to 4wd is the smaller stick. 2H is for normal conditions, 4H is when you need the normal 4wd, and 4L is when you get in some tough sh!t. 2H to 4H you can do on the fly at any speed, but 4H to 4L you gotta stop.

Message: Like the others said, only shift into and out of 4LO when you are stopped in neutral to avoid damage. 4LO is used for low speed crawling like when you are manuvering around obstacles off road. 2HIGH to 4HIGH and 4HIGH to 2HIGH can be done at any speed as there is no gear reduction involved.
Probly an indicator or light appears in the dash or instrument panel when you are in 4WD.
