Message: ok, I know the pros to swapping in a solid front axle, but I have been wondering if anyone has broken thier front axle or known anyone who has. I know they can be vulnerable to larger tires and traction, but I have not heard of one breaking, has it been done?

Message: Yes it is possible. I used to have a 5.5" TC Lift Kit with 33's on my 98 CC but I craked the rear portion of the differential housing while doing a little rock crawling and caused my driveshaft to go to an extreme angle, thus destroying the entire insides of the housing. So in other words I am now in the wonderful world of solid axles. My truck is on a day to day basis right now...maybe even tonight I will get it back...and I can't wait. I will post some pictures up as soon as I get it back and washed (it's been sitting for about 3 months so it has quite a bit of dust on it right now).
So it is very possible for your front axle to break as far as I have heard the front Dana 35's on the 97-99's can handle up to 33" tires and the currents can handle up to 32" tires, but that is on a safe judgement.

Message:
THis was done with 31's on a 2000+ truck. THey are pretty weak. If you want tires bigger than 33's and want to wheel your truck then get a solid axle.

Message: Mine had broken also it was a 2000 4x4. i was running 31s at the time also. the front axle is WAY too weak for this truck. mine was fixed under the recall so i didnt have to pay for it. I looked at the pics of the old axle and the new one and the ew one has thicker mounts and also extra mounting points.
Im running 33s right now on the truck but Im selling them to get 31s and then sell the truck.

Message: I am not looking for that to happen on my daily driver. I am thinking I may have to get a beater 4 by to go wheeling with and use the big dodge for a tow vehicle.

Message: I would look for a old solid axle chevy ford or jeep or dodge and leave the dakota at home. beat on somethign that is cheap to replace. i had a beater blazer and whenever I broke a axle I jsut went to the junkyard and got another one for about 50$.
I still take my dakota off road but it doesnt get to play rough. I jsut dont feel like breaking something and paying 1500$ to fix it

Message: yeah, i hear ya. why hasnt anyone made a heavy duty aftermarket center section for IFS yet? its only been around for 20 years. I have heard of custom 9" center sections and long travel suspension set ups, but only on toyotas. I just find it hard to believe that the aftermarket hasnt jumped on this bandwagon. I will have to shop for the beater...
