Message: Uh... so those of us that want a smooth ride with 4x4 capabilities, cargo room, and American muscle are asking too much?
Can the truck not evolve into something more refined than a bouncy, rough, shake rattle and roll box with wheels and tires?
Hmm... I think its time for a smooth riding, 4x4, with a good pull and power! But perhaps I'm too Beverly Hills-like..... nah, I doubt it. I think I just want to ride smoothly on a nice sunny day in L.A. down the highway, carry all my junk, go offroading when the mood hits me, and not throw up my lunch from the bouncy bouncy!

Message: Remember the days when you could get a nice 4x4 stripped for a low price. Remember when you could still get a truck with a floor mat instead of carpet. Remember when you could get a straight axle that was cheap to lift. Or how about when you didn't see people driving up and down the highway at 90mph on LT tires. (Ford Exploders) Remember when the idiots stayed inside when it snowed and didn't try to run you off the road at 55 in the snow because "I have a 4WD". I hate the fact that because of these people (Yuppies/Soccer moms) you can't buy a strong or cheap 4wd anymore. I'm in the fire service and it's getting old scraping these people and their victims off the road.

Message: Sorry to hear that. I know what you mean. When you are a purist, many times those things that you loved often evolve into something mediocre and watered down. But, for people like me, we would like something in the medium.
I guess the closest medium between truck and car are the Honda/Lexus-type SUVs. These SUVs are based on car platforms.... but, they are expensive as hell, and weak! Plus, when it comes to SUVs or trucks, I'd prefer to buy American.

Sorry. I just read this and I felt sick to my stomach. Between this and the lowered Dakota I saw this morning I am more determined than ever to make my truck kick ass in Moab as it has done before. Yet still be able to beat most of these lowered things on the quarter. Impossible you might say? But at the very least I'll lift my truck when funding becomes avaiable.

Message: we-ja,
first of all you won't be able to do much offroading with a dropped truck
second, try new shocks because the factory shocks go out after about 15-20k...
the dakota 4x4 is a very smooth truck for it's factory height.....
i think dropping it will only make the ride stiffer....
from my expeirience in being in dropped vehicles they are just stiffer...
factory is always the best way to leave your truck, it will last a lifetime....

Message: Oh, you guys have got me wrong. I was responding the subject of dropping a 4x4. I think dropping a 4x4 is nonsense... the purpose of the 4x4 is to be offroad capable and more so than a 2wd SUV/truck.
I was just concerned with getting a more versatile shock that would adjust to highway conditions for a smooth ride, and also allow me the same offroad agility that I currently have with the factory shocks.
I don't want to drop my Durango, just make it smoother. But the more I drive it, the more Im getting used to the ride.
But now that you said the factory shocks go out at about 15k miles, I think I will look into the Rancho shocks (RSX or RS9000 with the onboard adjuster).
Any advice?

Message: If you want to be able to adjust the ride go with the Rancho's. If you are in LA or anywhere in CA being able to adjust the shocks for the extremley poor Highways is great. I change from setting 2 - 4 just depending on which way I head from my house. North the roads are ok so anything is fine going South I soften them up since the roads are rough and bumpy. I have found Highways made from Concrete are the worst to drive on. I generally like the # 2 and 3 settings best on the highway. Off road #4. I am not sure how worth it it is to have the in cab adjuster and run all of the lines out. I have no complaints about the ride I get from my truck. My only complaint is CALTRANS!!!
The Bilsteins are great to if you do not want or need to adjust the ride.

Message: This is for the guy who dropped his Durango 3 inches, you got to tell us how you did it. I have a 03 Dakota with the 5.9 and I want to drop it too. I ran into a air system called porkchops that are for raising your truck using airbags to twist your torsion bars. I wonder how would it be to have the truck slammed then us the pork chops to rais the truck up to cruising altitude?

Message: hey we_ja,
Forget about the onboard adjusters for the Rancho 9000's. You're liable to spend the first three weeks chasing the leaks in the lines. After they are all sealed you'll be fine but chasing leaks is the last thing I want to do on a weekend. I've chased leaks on 4 peoples rides that had them installed by "professional" off-raod shops. The shocks are great but it's easier to crawl under the truck and adjust them manually when your hitt'n the trails. But then again that's easy for me to say, I'm 7 inches over stock. Not much trouble getting under to adjust them for me. ;-)

Message: i have a 4x4 dak 2000 and reading previous posts on lowering, yes i want to lower it and if you dont like it its just too bad isnt it! lol jk
if adjusting the torsion bars (up to a 2" drop) will affect ride (which i have to say is very loose stock), will getting performance shocks 2" shorter compensate? possible a sway package too? which i am considering getting with or without a drop
any info would be great thanks

Message: You can adjust the torsion bars up front and see how much drop you get from that, then do the rear. I believe the springs are under the rear axle on a Durango , if so , you only need to install the correct size lowering block.
You should easily get 2in. front and 3 in rear.
I`m not sure how much you`ll be able to lower it running 22s though.
