Subject: info on LSD or Pos Traction IP: Logged
Message: I have a 97, 2WD, auto, 3.9 V6. I am looking at getting some type of LSD or positive. I dont know very much about it so any info would be great. I have heard about Detriot Lockers, and Dana Spicer. would any of these be made for a 2WD. What are your suggestions on products. Thanks for your help.

Message: Since you have 2wd, the rear end is all that you are interested in for lockers, so it doesn't matter 2wd or 4wd. If your interested in a fully locked rear end, get a Detroit locker. It should be available for a Chrysler 8.25 or 9.25 rear axle. Both could be found under your truck. There are several other models with fully locked, limited slip, part-time locked applications. I suggest you go to a supermarket, buy an off-road magazine and read, read, read. Keep on buying, subscribe if you can afford $12. and read, read, read. There are also ads in there that have applications and prices. Good luck

Message: powertrax is a good brand, not sure if it is a locker or a limited-slip. If you're off-roading severely, get a full on locker like the Detroit, not very expensive, about 350. the powertrax, if it is a locker should be about the same price, if not more. If a limited slip, don't get it unless you're street racing. Off road buy Detroit, it'll never break. Any limited slip will cost you just as much.

Message: The powertrax no-slip is a locker...works just like a locker....automatic. It never fails to lock off road and it's instant. The reason i went with the powertrax over the detroit was cuz my truck is my daily driver. Detroits suck on streets and make alot of noise. Powertrax is silent and only locks when slippage is detected. Very nice.

Message: chaximus,
didn't know the powertrax is a full on locker, I know other lockers don't engage until lots of throttle, including Detroit. I would love to have one of those electronically controlled lockers, I forget the brand name, but it acts as a limited slip and then you can change it to fully locked with a flip of a switch. Can't remember, sorry.

Message: The Powertrax people have 2 kinds of lockers . The less expensive 1 is called LOCK-RITE and works well
but it ratchets audibly when going around corners on dry pavement.
The other type is called NO-SLIP and costs about 100 bucks more. Still a lot cheaper than a LSD.
Here are the reasons it's worth it. 1) It's quiet, I mean NO noise.
2) It is designed tough enough for on road and off-road use. ( but not in extremely modified rigs)
3) It is easily installed by you if you have a friend help in pushing the axles in and out for you while you're under there.
4) You'll get great launches without that dreaded one-wheel-burnout.
I just installed one on my 2001 QC 4x4 and I've only changed plugs and filters before.(great instructions)
It runs fully locked at all times until during a turn when the load on the axle from the outer tire travelling further than the inner tire increases.
At this point a set if internal springs push the lockers "gears" apart allowing the unit to act as an open diff. would.
All it takes to lock again is the partial rotation of the wheels in a straight line. (no more than a full rotation ,usually less)
The only draw backs occur at hard turn at parking lot speeds when the mechanism locks and unlocks. It feels a bit like you just drove over a manhole cover. Not bad but noticeable.
Otherwise you just drive it like usual.

Message: Lockers are frustrating. It seems you need a specific one for EXACTLY what you want it for.
Street racing, I don't know, but it seems a factory LSD would do.
All off-road, full on locker, no slipping in and out, leaves no room for unwanted slippage on your contact patches.
I do know that LSDs only work initially but after both tires spin a little, in mud or snow, then it is worthless, one wheel wonder! That's when you want a Lincoln Locker.

Message: Detroit lockers are not noisey nor does it not work good on road. No popping or clunking. wheel chirp in tight turns and when you hit the gas a little hard from a stand still.
Never late for a Tee time or wheelin with my buddies! Always ready for both!!!Forexfour's home

Message: Two things that will be left after a nuclear war. 1. Cockroaches. 2. Detroit lockers. You'll break everything else on your truck before you break one of those things.
