Subject: Off-Road Flag IP: Logged
Message: not sure how many of you guys out there use a flag when off-roading...but up here in Michigan it's required on the Silver Lake dunes...and I was wanting to make some kind of bracket for my flag that sticks out between the bumper and grille on the passenger side...I was thinking about bolting a piece of steel to the big bolts that mount the bumper to the frame...two problems...one bolt holding bracket means that it will be able to swivel left and right...second is that all the bolts in that area are in such odd positions it would make it difficult to make some kind of bracket that would actually hold up to the stress...any ideas or plans that people have used or have would be extremely helpful!...thanks in advance!

Message: Could you do one off the rear part of the frame so that it sticks out near the back right corner of the truck, much more room to work there.
Or maybe something that bolts inside the bed?

Message: I suppose I could....but I'm not sure but I think it is supposed to be on the front so people can see you coming over the top of the dunes before your front end reaches that point...who knows...I suppose I could take my bumper off and see what I have to work with...but thanks for the suggestion!

Message: according to most laws by the BLM, the flag can be mounted anywhere on the vehicle as long as it's atleast five feet over the top. if it were me i'd have the flag on the back, i say this because i have seen plenty of flags break off and whip up against the vehicle. plus, having it on the back will allowed the fiberglass shaft to flex without resting up against the grill.

Message: At Silver Lake you have to have the flag on the front of the truck. About the best solution I came up with was to put a front receiver hitch on and then use some 2x2 to make a flag mount. You can then put some pipe insulation on the mast so it won't mark up your truck. I wheeled with about 50 Hummers there and they don't have anything on Dakotas when it comes to Test Hill!

Message: I mount mine to one of the light mounts on the safari bar. Works pretty well.

Message: I live in a dune area and go all the time the require it to me toward the front on trucks bed rail behind the cab. I hated it hitting the cab. I went to a CB shop and got a CB Magnetic base with removable shaft, and o stick it on the roof then the flag is like 6 foot above the Truck and BLM like it. If that doesn't help go to your locial BLM office and ask for some advice, they will normailly halp.

Message: I went to the dunes last summer, and the guy at the shop by the entrance of the dunes gave me the proper brackets to mount the flag to my 97 dakota. all it is, is on "l" bracket and one straight bracket that goes between the bumber and the grill.

Message: They may be a bit offtopic, but has anyone had problems with a club cab Dakota in the dunes being to long and getting hung up on the top of hills while cresting them?? Seems they have a rather long wheelbase with a CC and I worry about this happening if I decide to purchase a CC dakota.

his hitch in place of the ball. looked like a pretty simple
set up if you have a hitch.

Message: ok...I rigged up something that should work...I've heard a lot of people to tell me to put an air fitting on the end of it and make it quick release...and I was wondering what size I need...1/4, 3/8 or what

Message: I've gotten high centered a time or two, TWIST. But no more often than the extended cab full size guys. Only time I high center is when I park on top of the hill. Otherwise momentum will carry you right over the top.
