Subject: GOT STUCK!!Limited slip help in mud? IP: Logged
Message: Got stuck in some heavy clay mud. Had to get pulled out by an old Ford. Quite embarressing. I don't have a limited slip. Most of our four wheeling is in sand and mud and not alot of steep hill climbing. Would a limited slip install in our truck help in mud and sand if all four wheels are in the same type of sand and mud?

Message: Yes a locker will help. Put realy there is no substitute for ground clearance and good off road tires.

Message: Yes, any kind of LSD or locker will help you. The more tires turning the better. One tire may be able to find a little traction that the others cant and may keep you moving. Also, the more tires turning the less the others have to drag them through stuff.

Message: From what I remember, with an LSD the left tire does not kick in until the LSD senses the right tire spinning (and it can only detect a "spin" if the left tire is stable and the right is spinning). So if you ever encounter a position where you just spin your right rear tire and the left rear is stable, then the LSD sends power to the left tire to get it going.
Am I right? Help me guys.

Message: There are a variety of LSD's. They range from adding resistance to the tire that has traction to an outright lock between tires on the same axle. I will try to find a link that explains the range of options or maybe someone else already has one. Not only are there performance differences but there are advantages and disadvantages on-road vs off-road. It makes for interesting reading and I have to explore the options periodically due to ongoing technical improvements.

Message: Next time you get stuck, try applying the e-brake where it will apply pressure to the tire that is spinning.. allowing the other tire a chance to take up the slack.."until you get a LSD" ;-)

Message: Getting stuck is just a way to learn not to! Every body gets stuck at some point. Learn from your mistakes. Can't believe nobody recommended tire pressure. In sand and mud take down the air pressure in your tires. You can go as low as 10 psi. This will give your tires a much wider base and much more tread to get traction on. When you are out of the muck pump the tires back up to normal. I also carry a high lift jack with me. If you get stuck it won't be for long. Lift all the tires out 1 at a time. Backfill the hole that the tires occupied with a shovel. Take down the tire pressure and drive off. I had to be taught this. Haven't been stuck for long since. And I now get myself out of the situation.

Message: If your off road a lot a Warn Winch is invaluable. I tottaly agree about the tire pressure!!! And if you are really into it you can get an airlocker, then you have a locked diff when you need it and an Air compressor for the Diff and to refill your tires afterward.
I had this type of setup on an 87 K5 Blazer with 10"'s of lift. 38"s. It was bad ASS, but I still got to stuck to get out ONCE (Up to the bottom of my window sills!)...

Message: Ryan you are right to an extent abou the LSD's. There are a lot of different ones one the market. Some are better than others and they vary in construction. A good LSD will not reqire you to spin one tire to get the other one to turn. Unfortunalty that is how some work. A good LSD like and Auburn or (thankfully) the ones Dodge uses from the factory (not sure of the brand at this time) Are very good. Both tires are getting power. But yes you are pretty much right. Some do require one tire to loose traction and spin, when this happens it makes the lsd engage more power to the other tire. Just remember everyone, LSD's and Lockers are totally different animals. A locker allows very little to no difference in tire speed. Much better than an LSD off road for sure but a bit harder on the tires and driver on the road. That is not meant to sound as though it will just kill you or your tires on the road, just that things wont be quite as gentle as with a LSD. If you go offroad, you will eventually get stuck. Dont care who you are ot what you have. Just learn from it. How and why did it happen. What could I have done differently to avoid it. etc. Also as a final FFT, dont charge someone to pull them out, it may just be you who needs pulling out next time.

Message: Well, I just read all those posts about LSDs. Should I order my 2002 Dakota Club Cab 4x4 with the optional LSD? Is it worth the $285? It also comes with a 3.92 gear which is also $40. I am ordering a 4.7L with a 5 speed if that makes any difference. I'll use the truck for everyday driving but I'd like to have some off-road capability and I live in Indy, which can get some heavy snow at times! I'd like some opinions please! Thanks!

Message: By all mean do order the LSD. You wont regret it. It is a lot cheaper to get it now than to add it later.

Message: If your gonna spend that extra money you might as well just wait and get a locker. Unless you want to go with a ARB air locker which as most of us know are pretty expensive, but is a god in the locker field. Just my oppion guess it depends on what kind of offroading your gonna do. if its just casual offroading and nother major just opt for the LSD, if you plan on doing alot or major offroading then wait and get a locker much better and they got ones now that arn't loud or too hard on tires....its called a ez locker. hope the info helps

Message: Before anyone gets their hopes up about having an ARB air locker in their Dak, you should know that they don't exist for a dakota axle. That was last I heard anyways. Heaven knows I would love to have one.
