Subject: X-terrain RE-view,,,,BFG MT/KM PRE-view. IP: Logged
Message: Well, I got some new 33/12.50 BFG MT KM's on today. X-Terrains had about seen their life. Just wanted to post a little review of the old and a preview of the new.
X-Terrains are AMAZING tires. No other way to put it. Not a true mud tire, but more like a Hyper aggressive all terrain. ABout the ONLY place they had ANY trouble was in really bad mud, and as I have stated before, they oculd do it, just not quite as easily as a true mud tire. They really grab and pull at everything off-road.
On the negative side, they did grow to be a bit loud as the wore. Not like a swamper mind you, but loud enough you could hear them pretty good in the cab. Keeping your front end aligned OFTEN and regular rotation is a must with these tires. Since their tread blockes are bigger than normal, they will scallop fairly easily if the alignment and rotation isnt kept up. I made that mistake, but not intentionally. When they start scalloping, it significantly reduces their life, increases the noise, and most importantly, starts to give a pretty good vibration to the truck. This vibration is more noticable with them than many other tires of the same size, due to the large tread blocks. Once they start wearing down, they do start to loose traction pretty quick. Mine were great on the road in the beginning, but as they got worn down, they became pretty slick on wet roads. Again, just the nature of the tire. Mine have about 1/8 on and inch tread left. Thats a lot on a car tire, but not on a truck tire like this. With the large tread blocks, the void between them isnt deep enough to adequately push out mud and stuff off road, or water on road. Hence the degrading performance on wet roads. As for miles on them, I cant accurately tell you. I didnt look at my odometer when I put them on, but I do know that they have at least 25,000 miles on them, the majority of that on road.
Overall, I LOVE the X-Terrain. It is an outstanding tire. It just has a few characteristics that one should be aware of.
I had a set of BFG MT's on my F150 that I traded in on my Dakota. They were great. I have always been a big BFG fan. I put BFG AT's on my Dakota right after I got it. They were of course great. before they were hardly broke in though, I decided to lift it and that when I put on the X-Terrains. Today I got a new set of the BFG MT's put on. I really love the new design over the older one. Just on the ride home, I could tell a HUGE difference over the worn out X-terrains. The BFG's are about 80% QUIETER than the XT's. In fact, these new MT KM's are even quieter than my older MT's. I couldnt believe how quiet they are. More like an all terrain. The ride was OUTSTANDING! Again, better than my older MT's. Just a little shimmy in the steering wheel, but that should go away as they get broke in a little. I brought my old XT's home to try and sell them to someone who just needs a temp tire or something on an truck they are fixing up or something. Had to take them to my barn out back. We have had a TON of rain in past week/few days here. All the back of my property is under water nearly. Has turned it into a big mush pit. When driving back to my barn I started sinking like a rock. Made it a LONG ways before I had to engage 4 wheel drive. BFG's just kept on grabbing. To keep this short, they got a GOOD soupy mud test, much to the dis-approval of my wife. They did outstanding. Needless to say, my initial impression with the new re-designed BFG MT's is GREAT! Will have to try them in some other mediums, ie- wet roads, sand, etc.. to get a better impression of them, but that shouldnt take long here. So far they get to thumbs up.
Hope this info can be of some help. Will post more as I get it.

Message: Well, since it has been pouring down rain since late yesterday evening, and we were already soaking wet, there is PLENTY of water around. Driving to church and back this morning in the pouring rain, the BFG's were outstanding. Even from a dead stop at a stop light with it pouring, I could get on the gas pretty hard and not have the back tires break loose. The X-Terrains in their final days were to the point of breaking loose with even the slightest bit of hard throttle. Handleing on the road at 65mph in the rain was great as well. They really resisted hydroplaning and pumped the water out from under the tires well. No tendency to want to slip in hard curves/turns either. So far so good.
