Subject: LOUD clink noise after powertrax install
IP: Logged

Message:
Just installed the Powertrax no-slip diff today, as I was pulling away and turned heard a LOUD snap type noise from the rear.Scared the crap out of me..Installation went normal, guage fit right between couplers, per instructions...Is this normal until the unit is broken in? Only have 6 miles on it so far, still loud click when turning (just once per turn) Any help would be appreciated, powertrax and the vendors are all closed on the weekends....

I think that noise is normal as mine did that after install as well. It did it a couple of more times for the first 1-2 hundred miles and it hasn't done it since then. Since it's still working fine after about 10,000 miles I figure it was just a matter of settling in...
Hopefully...

Good luck with yours, hopefully it's just doing the same.

Thanks for the reply,I read a few install articles online, some mentioned the noise some didn't.It did scare the crap out of me,and the instructions fail to warn the poor bastard who just installed it (me) I think you're right, though it just needs to break in,we'll see.....

Is this just a posi trac? I am looking for something that regulates power to both tires at the same time. I hate this 1 tire spinning stuff. Not worth a crap in mud. Any suggestions? I dont want anything as serious as an air locker or equ. Just a simple install in my rear diff and go. Thanks.

It's an automatic rear locker. I have the powertrax no-slip in my diff and it works like a charm. Just scary on snow and ice :) It locks both wheels when slippage is detected. Sorta like when a tire slips a fraction of an inch, it's already locked before u know it. Really nice but a tad bit costly. I didn't hear any clicking in my diff when i had it installed, but then again, i'm hearing impaired so i couldn't hear it anyways :)

I got mine used, and it's been in for almost 2 years and about 25,000 miles of on and off road fun, and it still clunks once in awhile. It still spooks me when it does, and really scares the crap out of my Mom when she drives it :) I'm not going to sweat it until it actually breaks, and then, I still have my orig spider gears in the garage, and is only an hour or so to put them back in.

you have nothing to worry about that is normal operation sound when turning. that is diff engaging and disengaging when going around a corner. i have had one before and never had a problem with it. if it makes the noise only when you turn every thing is working fine , but if it makes it when your driving in a straight line i would have it checked out.

Hey Joe E. , I'm in Orlando. Bought the no-slip from RockyRoad outfitters, $350 plus shipping,do you have an open differential now? If so,its an easy install. They also sell the lock-right for only $250.

Thats good,a manual trans is a nightmare with a full locker. It all boils down to what you're willing to put up with as far as street amnners vs price. You can buy a powertrax lock-right for $250, no-slip for $350 and install either one by yourself,or buy a limited slip for around 200(??)but it will have to be professionally installed-could be as much as $300 additional.Since your truck is 2wd,the limited slip is probably the best for you.
