Subject: CB Tuning Question
IP: Logged

Message:

I just installed my Cobra CB and a 9ft whip on my truck. The antenna is mounted in the rear driverside corner of the bed and i used a 20 cable that already had connecters on it.

my problem is that i dont seem to be getting good reception at all. i can hear people talking, but it is not clear...i am planning on getting it tuned, but should the reception be as bad as it is right now?

also I called a stereo shop and they wanted $70 to tune it..this seems a little high...

thanks for the help

kevin

Around here in NC its only $25 for tuning. Check your antenna mount, it may be grounding out, thats what happened to mine, the local CB shop checked it out with a voltmeter, and it was grounding out, i had little reception, and no one could here me at all, check that first, and buy a new antenna mount, and never over tighten the antenna mount, it will mess up the brass connectors inside of it. that is whatI think.

To tune a CB you need a power meter. You tune the antenna by changing its length untill you get the best power to noise ratio. I have played with the screw on top of my Firestick and got better reception then I had. To get the maximum performance you need a shop to tune it.

Did you try Santa Cruz Sound Garden behind All American. They were the top two installers from Lotts' who started their own place.

You can purchase inexpensive tuning machines from Radio Shack. I purchased one and have used it a few times with pretty good success.

hey perp you do not use a "power meter" to tune your antenna, you use a SWR or "standing wave ratio" meter. big difference.

" grounding out " is when the power wire that connects to the antena ( center probe with screw type connectors) is shorting to ground.
Think of your antena as A 12 volt DC light bulb, power goes to the antena through the center wire and transmitts the signal. Then goes to ground through the outside wire back through the CB radio.

Thanks Byran for clearing up the "grounding out" problem for him. I haven't had a chance to respond. But BIGDAWG: I mounted my cb just to the lower right of the steering wheel, lke when u sit in the drivers side, jsut above your right knee, Im 6'4" and in my CC i have no problems with my knee hitting the cb, and it is always within easyreach, and looks pretty good, sometime I hope to get pics :-/, post here or IM me on aol @ Dodgecowboy if you have any "?"s

i fixed the problem. the antenna was grounding out because i had the plastic spacer on the wrong side of the mount.

i have a 5speed, and mounted it to the right of the shifter, facing me just slightly, i will post some pics soon...

thanks everyone for the help
