Message: Just curious if anyone has ever mounted their spare in the bed? I strapped mine there for a week or so and gained a few mpg. Also, it's easier to get to when you set the truck down on its frame. The only disadvantage is loosing that weight from behind the rearend and moving it up front. Considering I use this truck as a daily and for occational light off roading, is there anyone who knows where I can find a mount (flat to the bed, or maybe a slight tilt). I went to Home Depot to see if I could customize a plate, but the one I went to did have anything good to do it with. Plus I don't have access to a welder. Any ideas???

Message: Check with Fabtech. I know they make stuff like this. If not them, you may want to try and find a local welding or farbrication shop and see if they could custom make you one.

Message: Yep. I've got a spare in the bed of my truck right now. I did not buy one of those outrageously expensive spare tire mounts, either. Got mine for about $15. You can see pics of my black beauty at:

Click on the link where it talks about seeing a pic of a Dakota with a 2" lift and bigger tires. Near the middle of the page.

Message: You can find a spare tire carrier that does not require bolting to the bed at:
http://www.netins.net/showcase/xtratire
If your tire is not too big, it can be mounted behind the wheel well, if you want the weight behind the axle. Otherwise the spare can be mounted in the front of the bed or against the side wall in front of the wheel well. Your spare can be made secure with a locking lug nut.

Message: I used a pre-runner type spare tire carrier. It's mounted just behind the window and uses 5 bolts. I also put reinforcement plates underneath the bed where the bolts come through. It holds up to a 38" tire (mine are only 33's) and comes either raw or powdercoated. I can get you one for about $125 plus shipping. It looks exaactly like the Fabtech one, excpept it doesn't cost $300. Just let me know. Theres a pic of it under the "Bolt on Accessories" link on my website.
